Namaste,

Sri Sri Shyama charan lahiri mahasaya  used  to  say

If anybody wants to understand  Bhagavad Gita ----  one has  to  enter  in  to

his  own  inner self  because  its  not  possible  to  understand  the  real

meaning  of  Gita  out side. Sri  Lahiri mahasaya  interpreted  Gita  to  his

disciples  every day  after experiancing it    through  his sadhana.

One  such  sloka  which  is  common to  us  all and  which  is wrongly

interpreted  is

patram, pushpam, phalam  toyam  yome bhakhtya prayacchati

Tadaham  bhakktyupa hrutamasnami  prayatatmanaha

Normally  we  think  God  is  asking  us  to  offer  him  patram ,phushpam,

phalam and toyam  and  we  start  offering  him  all leaves  flowers  and  frui

what  does  he  mean  by  this?  Does  he  really  want  us  to  do  pooja  with

the  above  said  things?  if  so  why  didnt  he  mention  which  leaves

flowers  and fruit  are  suitable  for  his  worship

Patram  means  leaf  which  represents  our  body  Like  a   green  leaf  turns

yellow  fades  away  and  falls  down  our  body  also wither  away  one

day.God  is  asking  us  to  offer  this  body  to  him.  How  can  we  do

this?

When   a  sadhaka  gains  victory  over  his  Indriyas  after  doing  some

sadhana  he  forgets  about  his  body  and  involves  totally  in  his

innerself. This  is  the  first  step

Then  comes pushpam  which  represents  the beautiful  vision  a  sadhaka  gets

or  experiance  in  his  kootastha This  pushpam  God  is  asking  us  to

offer  him. That  means  one  should not  be  satisfied  here  and  stop  his

sadhana

Next  come  phalam  which  represents  the  Atma  darshanam.  when  a  sadhaka

advances  further  in  his  sadhana  he  gets  Atma  darshanam. This  is  the

fruit  of  his  sadhana  and  Lord  God  is  asking  us  to  offer  him  this

fruit

Last  comes  Toyam[water or  neeru]  which  represents  the  flow  of  prana

in  our body. How  can  anyone  give  this? Does  Lord  want  us  to  take  away

our  prana  and  offer  him? Not at all.----

After  Atma  darshanam  in  his  kootastha   the  sadhaka  further  travels

towards  sahasrara and  when  all  vibrations  of  prana  come  to  a  stand

still  .This  toyam  or  prana  Lord  is  asking  us  to  offer  him. That  is

when  a  sadhaka  offers  his  prana  flow  to  Lord  he  is  said  to  be  in

paravastha  and  automatically  reaches  the  blissful  state  of  satchidanad.

This  is  the  real  meaning  of  patram, pushpam, phalam  and  toyam  and  most

of  us  not  knowing  this  are  seriously  involved  in   doing  pooja  with

all  sorts  of  leaves fruit  and  flower

I  see  many  women  and  men  early  in  the  morning  go  out  for  a  walk

and  collect  flowers   fromm different  houses[without  house  owners

knowledge]  for  their  daily  pooja  thinking  that  its  a  great  act .First

thing  we  all should  remember is  that  its wrong  to  pluck  flowers  from

somebodys garden  for  pooja  and  if  one  has  no  money  to  buy  flowers

just simple  pranamam  will do  because  every thing  in  this  universe  is

His  creation  and  what  is  great  on  our  part  if  we  offer  him

something  that  he  has  created?

In devine love i remain

kumari
