Guest guest
hari om, i have been reading some of swami vivekananda's books for some time now and i am yearning for some practical experience . i would like to know how to meditate. looking forward to some help from the fellow members of this group.i would be highly thankful if any of you could help me on this topic. Varun Namaste, Meditation is the process of concentration on the formless, dissolving the mind, leaving the radiant self, the essence alone, known. It is a long, difficult process and progresses in stages. Along the way as the concentration deepens everything you need is revealed from within. At first you must relax and still the body, sitting with a straight spine. The breath controls the mind so relax and breathe. If you love some aspect of the Divine, such as Sri Ramakrishna, or any other form, concentrate on that within the forehead, know it is real and is aware of you and invite it into your awareness. A qualified teacher is a great, great help with this process from beginning to end, seek one out. As you become aware of the next stage through practice, stick with it and more will be revealed to you until eventually, in utter surrender and love, you will know why you have had the urge to meditate. All my prayers for your success. Bob Rose

Guest guest
Namaste, Bathe first, bow to whom you love and pray for their blessing on your practice. It may be God or Goddess, or some exalted being, or self, whatever. Do you believe this is real and can hear you? Sit still, breathe calmly. Forget the breath, seek the answer to your prayer. Never stop your practice for any reason. Eventually more and more the truth will be revealed to you from within, you are what you seek. All my love and prayers for your success, Bob Rose Hello everyone! my topic for discussion is meditation, I would like to ask how to tackle unwanted distractions within the concentration of the mind, do you just let these distractions pass, should you be concerned about these distractions. I find that when I attempt to meditate at times I get unwanted distractions of daily life. This breaks my concentration and I have to start again. Please let me know how you meditate and cope with distractions if any. Thank you! Neil Mukherjee.
Guest guest
Hi, If you already have a mantra (of any diety), then you are always free to meditate on it at the peaceful ambience of any of the Ramakrishna Center. If your question is regarding getting a mantra from any of the senior monks in Ramkrishna order, then yes, Sri Ramakrishna will be your chosen diety and you can receive only Ramakrishna mantra. As far as I know, the practice of chosing your diety for a mantra has been stopped from Srimad Swami Vireswarananda's (10th President of SRK Mission) time. Or one can actually pick his/her deity and meditate upon them. That is considering you are given mantra by the guru.Hopefully someone can answer me. Thank you. Don't pick lemons. Guest guest
Dear Sujith, I really appreciate your reply. It's is great to be initiated into Sri Ramakrishna as deity and follow his teachings. But its also interesting to know why choosing own deities was stopped - as it seems that centers follow holy day and pujas. Maybe its policy of each center, and I should address it there. Thank you. Guest guest
I had put this question to one of the senior monks of Ramakrishna order. He told me the following incident. Earlier there used to be a column to fill the chosen deity's name in the initiation application form. Almost all used to fill this out as Sri Ramakrishna but once when Swami Vireswarananda was visiting a center located in Kerala, South India, some one gave Lord Ayyappa as his chosen deity and Swamiji did not know the mantra. Before initiating someone with a mantra, the Guru should practice it and attain Siddhi. So, Swamiji sent someone to Sabarimala temple which is the main temple dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, got the mantra from the chief priest there, practiced it and initiated the person with the mantra. After this incident he maintained the practice to provide only Ramakrishna mantra to all. Swamiji used to say this was the will of Sri Ramakrishna. Although Swamiji would never disclose it, the monk who was close to Swamiji told me that He must have got the mandate in a vision. Some may think this as a biased decision but we can never judge something that we cannot comprehend. One of my close friend who is a monk in the order once told me, he always felt that these senior monks belong to a totally different plane of existence than ours. Thanks, Sujith Don't get soaked. Guest guest
Yes, indeed the monks of the order are definitely not ordinary and it takes holiness to recognize holiness especially as they do not make a "show" of their holiness and conceal it rather well. There is nothing biased about giving only Ramakrishna mantras. Ramakrishna represents all the previous and future avatars so repeating the Ramakrishna mantras would also satisfy other chosen deities. He was "avatar varishtaya". This should especially make sense for anyone who wants to be initiated by a monk of the RK order.

Guest guest
Meditation A man was sitting on the bank of a stream, all alone, fishing. It was getting late and still he had caught no fish. After a while the float on his line began to move. Now and then its tip touched the water. The fisherman was holding the line tight in his hands, ready to pull it up, when somebody came walking by, on the road above the banks of the stream. " Sir, " the traveller said to the fisherman, " can you tell me where the Lettermans live? It's somewhere around here... " There was no reply from the fisherman, because he was just on the verge of pulling up his rod. There seemed to be business at the end of the line. Again and again the traveller said, in a louder voice, " Sir, can you tell me where the Lettermans live? " But the man fishing in the stream was unconscious of everything around him. His hands were trembling, his eyes fixed on the float, the picture of a fine fish about to come up, vivid in his mind. " This man must be stone deaf, " said the traveller to himself, very much annoyed, and so he started walking on the road again. After he had gone quite a way, it happened that the fisherman's float sank under the water and with one pull of the rod he landed a good sized fish. Wiping the sweat from, his brow (it was a hot day) he now turned and shouted after the visitor. " Hey! " he said. " Come here! Listen! But the man would not even turn his face. After much shouting, however, he did come back. He said to the fisherman, " Why are you shouting at me? " " What did you ask me about? " said the fisherman. " Why, I repeated my question so many times and here you are, asking me to repeat it again! " The fisherman replied: " At that time a fish was after my bait, so I didn't hear a word of what you said. " Sri Ramakrishna tells us that this is the kind of single-mindedness we must have in meditation; we must become completely absorbed. 8:43 PM 5/14/2009 -- MEDITATION TODAY: The greatest thing is meditation.
