Guest guest
Radhe Krishna To all, Sri Ramanuja did not decry anybody’s faith but felt that truth should be known. He, therefore, requested the Lord to show who He really was to the world. He requested all Bhaktas to bring the weapons of their favourite deities and placed them on the floor near the Lord, in His Sanctum sanctorum. Sri Ramanuja also placed the weapons of Lord Vishnu there. This was done at night. The doors were closed and when they opened in the morning the Lord stood holding the Shankha, Chakra, Gada, etc. in His hand showing that He was verily Vaikuntapati. Sri Ramanuja worships all in the Temple. He comes up to Kulasekara ‘padi’ (step), the step named after Kulasekhara azhwar. The step close to the Sanctum Sanctorum of the Deity in every Divya Desam is named after Kulasekara azhwar. Why? Kulasekara azhwar visits Tirupati. He sees the beautiful Lord being carried to Swami Pushkarani and bathing in it. At once, he cries out, ‘Oh, Lord! Would I not be a fish in these waters that have been blessed with thy touch?’ Looking at the flowers collected for the worship of the Lord he cries, ‘Oh, Lord! Would I not be a plant in thy ‘nandavan’ (garden)?’ Looking at the pillar in the Sanctum sanctorum he cries out, ‘Oh, Lord! Would I not be the pillar that stands here?’ Looking at the golden bowl that is filled with the flower for the Lord’s worship, he cries out, ‘Oh, Lord! Would I not be that golden bowl?’ He then goes on to sing, ‘Oh, Lord! Thou need not bestow these on me. But would I not remain here as verily a step close to thy Sanctum sanctorum so that I can always enjoy the beauty of thy red lips?’ and finally he sings in deep anguish, ‘oh, Lord, would I not take birth on this mountain in some form?’ Since, he had desired to remain as a step near the Lord’s Sanctum sanctorum to enjoy the beauty of the Lord’s red lips, every Divya Desam has this step named after Kulasekara azhwar – ‘Kulasekara padi’. Nammazhwar also known as Satagopan (one who has won over anger) sings, ‘unnum choru, parugum neer, thinnum vethiali ellaam Kannanukke’ – food is eaten, water is drunk and the betel leaves enjoyed only for the sake of Lord Krishna. ‘Food and water the essentials for living and betel leaf representing pleasure, should all be taken for the sake of the Lord,’ says Nammazhwar. He who did not drink even his mother’s milk, who did not drink a drop of water, speaks of food, water and betel leaf! As the child showed no signs of movement at birth Nammazhwar’s parents took him to the Temple and offered him to the Deity there. At once the child crawled to the nearby tamarind tree and sat in the hole in it. He sat there for 16 longs years without food or water. Today, we find people enjoying an air-conditioned room, eating variety of tasty food lecturing on the Brahman! In the Bhagavatam we find Jada Bharata eating spoilt food thrown at him as if it were ‘amrut’. Only Mahans like Jada Bharata and Nammazhwar can speak of the Brahman and not those who lead a life of luxury. These people may say that all is verily Brahman but can they lead a life of Mahans like Jada Bharata and still be able to speak that all is verily Brahman? We should take note of the circumstance under which Mahans spoke. The state in which their kirtans were sung should be taken note of. Only then can we comprehend their bhava. Tirupati was filled with plants, creepers and trees whose branches bent down with the weight of fragrant flowers. The flowers yearn to reach the Lotus Feet of the Lord! The flowers yearn for heavy downpour. Why? When it rains heavily the flowers are brought down and carried along with the water into the Temple and pushed to the Lotus Feet of the Lord. !!!
