Guest guest
The Purport of Gita Chapters 1-3 Chapter 1 A man is caught in a dilemma of " what to do and what not to do " and thus falls from his duty due to delusion. If he is not under the sway of delusion, he will not fall from his duty. Those men who have faith in Bhagwaan (God), Dharma (righteousness) , other worlds etc. for them lies a confusion within, a dilemma that if those duties that are assigned and allotted, are not properly executed, that they will fall. If they continue to be engaged in worldly duties, then they will not be elevated spiritually etc. etc. One wishes for their own salvation, but due to desire for enjoyment and attachment, the worldly matters do not release them. Such a confusion arose in Arjuna's mind, that is by engaging in war then the family lineage would be destroyed, and this would become an obstacle in attaining salvation; and if hedid not engage in war, then he would be straying away from his duty and this would become a obstacles in attaining salvation. Chapter 2 If a man brings to use either one of these points in his life - 1) To give importance to one's discrimination (vivek) and 2) to do one's prescribed duty, then he will be free of all worries, sorrow and regrets. All the bodies that are seen, they are all going to be destroyed, they will die, but the indweller of the bodies never dies. Just like this body left child-hood and went into youth, and from youth it went to old aged, similarly the indweller of this body, leaves one body and takes on another. Just like man takes off the old clothes and wears new ones, similarly the indweller of the body, leaves one set of clothes, puts on new ones. Whatever favorable and unfavorable situations that arise, they were not there at first and they will not remain later on, therefore in the middle too, separation that is taking place constantly. The point is that these situations are such that they come and go. They are not the kind that will remain forever. In this manner if one's discrimination becomes clear and distinct, then sorrows, worries, regrets cannot remain. Those allotted duties that are as prescribed by the scriptures, they must be dutifully observed remaining equanimous (free of all modifications) , whether the act is completed or uncompleted or fruits have been attained or not. In so doing also all confusion will come to an end. Chapter 3 In this world man should do his duty readily and promptly without the sentiments of desiring it's fruits, whether he is knowledgable or ignorant, whether he be a manifestation of God Himself ! Because this entire Universe functions on each of us doing our individual duties. Man can neither attain perfection (and occult powers) from initiating actions, nor from giving up actions. When Brahmaji created this world, he told the people that through the performance of each of your rightful duties, help each other and uplift them and you will attain the eternal good. He who does not perform his duties according to the limits and boundaries established for the smooth functioning of the Universe, for him it is useless to live in this world. In the three worlds there is not any actions to be done by Bhagwaan while He has manifested in the human Form. Then too for the well-being of all, He promptly performs His duties. Even a man of knowledge (jnani) must observe his duties promptly. One who does he duties, being free of selfish desires, if such a man's life comes to an end, then too he will be benefited.
