Dear Muralikrishna,

Bhakti is eternal.

When I found your earlier doubt regarding closing the eyes in front of the

God’s idol in the temple by bhaktas and the answers by our brothers, I felt

you are Janamejaya in our TBP.

Now by going through your doubt assigning number 2, I understand your intension

of conducting a forum on devotional subjects and not that you are unaware of the

subject.  Well, these kinds of doubts only enable to understand the glory of

our Sanatana Dharma, which is nothing but a Satsang.

Here my request to all the members is to participate without any hesitation, but

not entering into a debate, thus maintaining the healthy atmosphere of our

forum.  Any free discussions to know our Sanatana Dharma in depth may be

helpful.

Dear Muralikrishna, Your question appears to be small; but to precise the answer

itself is very difficult.

Let me clarify as I know:-

Valmiki once asked Narada, " O Venerable Rishi! Please tell me whether there is a

perfect man in this world who is at once virtuous, brave, dutiful, truthful,

noble, and steadfast in duty and kind to all beings " .

Narada replied, " There is such a one, a prince of Ikshvaku's line named Rama. He

is virtuous, brave, gentle, and wise. He is a great hero. He loves his subjects

immensely. He is a protector of Dharma. He is firm and steadfast.. He is just

and liberal. He is well-versed in the Vedas and in the science of arms. He is

unique in the possession of virtues and matchless in beauty.. He is an obedient

son, a kind brother, loving husband, a faithful friend, an ideal king, a

merciful enemy, and a lover of all living beings. All people adore him " .  This

was confirmed by Chaturmukha Brahma.  Even Lord Siva hailed about Rama to his

consort Devi Parvathi.

This is evident for the character of Rama.

Let us come to the point of his accepting the throne.

We must go from the events of Kaikeyi’s demand of two boons from king

Dasaratha.

Kaikeyi demanded two boons from Dasaratha.

1. Bharatha should be coronated instead of Rama.

2. Rama has to take refuge in the forest for fourteen years.

It is clear from the above that Kaikeyi has demanded for Rama’s FOURTEEN years

exile and not life long, which is bound to be given by Dasaratha as per his

promise and though Dasaratha was not willing to do so, Rama the incarnation of

Dharma, understanding the predicament of his father, who loved him most, agreed

to the conditions of mother Kaikeyi.  His wife Sita and brother Lakshmana

accompanied him to the forest.

Unable to contain his sorrow, king Dasaratha died. Bharatha who came back from

his uncle’s place refused to take over the reins of the kingdom of Ayodhya.

He journeyed to the forest and met Sri Rama.  Rama advised him to rule the

country for fourteen years.  Bharatha agreed to do this as a representative of

Rama.  He took along with him the padukas (sandal slippers) of Rama to a town

called Nandi Grama, the out skirts of Ayodhya and installed them on the throne

and ruled Ayodhya from there as a representative of Rama. While departing with

Rama, Bharatha told him “If I do not see you the following day when the

fourteenth year has fully ended, I shall enter the fire once for allâ€

All the above facts make it clear that Dasaratha never gave the kingdom to

Bharatha and the desire of mother Kaikeyi is to throne her son for fourteen

years.  Here also one important secret is there.  As per Hindu dharma sastra,

if any property is alienated for more than thirteen years, the owner looses his

right.  See her intelligent selfish thought forced by her servant Mandara!

On the day of completing fourteenth year exile, while Rama was about to return

to Ayodhya, he sent Anjaneya in advance to inform Bharatha about his meeting

him, knowing his beloved brother may end his life, in case he fails to meet him

in time.  Even at this stage also Rama maintained Raja dharma by asking

Anjaneya, to find whether Bharatha even after fourteen years has got the same

idea of giving away the kingdom or wanted to rule the kingdom.  In the case of

latter he wanted to drop his journey! But Bharatha who is also a part of the

incarnation of Lord, was about to enter the fire! Dharma is inherited in both.

(I know this, but could not quote the sloka, since the relevant papers from my

book are some how lost)

So Rama never deviated from dharma and dharma itself is in the shape of Rama.

The primordial word AUM is to be prefixed to all the stotras in our prayers,

where as it is not necessary in case of Rama, since the name of Rama is

considered as AUM.

In such case, let us pray Rama for venturing to discuss about his character..

The original slokas with meaning, connected to the above facts from Ramayana are

given below for those who are interested to read. The slokas might be more, but

only the required one as a test-check is selected, in connection with the above

doubt.

With love and regards,

Slokas 24 to 29 of sarga 11 of chapter 105 of Ayodhyakanda

Details of boons demanded by Kaikeyi:

24. abhishEkasamaarambhau raaghavsyOpakalitaha,

      anEnaivaabhishE kEna bharatOme abhishiichyataam.

All arrangements have been made to undertake Rama's coronation. Let my Bharata

instead be coronated on this occasion itself.

25. vO dvitiiyO varO dEva dattah priitEnamE tvayaa,

tadaa daivaasurE yuddhE tasya kaalO aya maagataha.

in the battle between celestials and demons.

26. nava pancha ca varshaaNi danDakkaraNyamaaSritah,

      ciiraajiina jaThadhaarii raamO bhavatu taapasaha.

Rama has to take refuge in the forest of Dandaka for fourteen years and let him

become an ascetic wearing rags, deer skin and matted hair

27. bharato bhajtaamadya youvaraajyamakanTakam,

EshnamE paramah kaamO dattamEva varam vriNE.

Now itself, Bharata has to get rights of succession to kingdom, which is free of

enemies. This is my greatest desire. Now I am asking for the boon given by you

in earlier.

28. adyacaiva hi pashyEvam prayaantam raaghavam vanam.

Now itself let me see Rama going to forest.

29. sa raayaraajO bhava styasmgarah,

kulam ca Siilam ca hi raksha janma ca,

      paratra vaase hi vadntyanuttamam,

      tapOdhanaah satyavaacO hitam nRiNaam.

Oh King of the Kings, Dasaratha! Be true to your promise and protect your caste,

character and birth. Are not the ascetics told that for human beings to get

happiness in another world, they have to speak only the truth?

Slokas 40 to 46 of chapter 105 of Ayodhyakanda

 ,

Rama refused to the request of Bharata asking him to come back to Ayodhya to

take over the kingdom and when Bharata persuades Rama to come and rule Ayodhya,

Rama’s reply to Bharatha again and again the reason for his not accepting to

come back.

40. sa svasthO bhava maa SOcO yaatvaa ca aavasa taam puriim,

tathaa pitraa niyuktO asi vaSinaa vadataamu vara.

Be composed, O Most eloquent of orators! Control your grief, return to the City

senses.

41. yatra aham api tEna Eva niyaktah puNya karmaNaa,

tatra Eva aham karishyaami pitur aaryasya Sasanam.

I also will fulfill the command of our father, the venerable man in that very

place, where I have been ordered to stay by that king Dasaratha of virtuous

deeds.

42. na mayaa Saasanam tasya tyaktum nyaayyam arim dama,

tat tvayaa api sadaa maanyam sa vai bandhuh sa nah pitaa.

O Bharata the Vanquisher of Foes! It is not justifiable for me to violate the

command of our father. You also must honour it to the end, for it comes from our

father, out own blood.

43. tadvaacah piturEvaaham sammatam dharmacaariNah,

      karmaNaa paalayiSyaami vanavaasEna raghava.

O, Bharata! Hence, I shall conform to the honorable word of our father, the

noted king  of virtue, by my act of dwelling in the forest.

44. dhaarmikENaanRisamsEna narENa guruvartinaa,

      bhavitavyam naravyaaghram paralokam jigiiSataa.

O, Tiger among men! Thus should a pious man act, who seeks to harm none, who is

obedient to his elders and who aspires to conquer the higher world.

45. aatmaanamanutishTha tvam svabhaavEna nararSabha,

nishaamya tu Subham vRittam piturdaSarathasya naha.

O, excellent among men! Perceiving the virtuous conduct of our father, the King

Dasaratha, act in conformity to your own nature.

46. ityEvamuktvaa vacanam mahaatmaa,

      piturnidESapratipaalanaartham,

      yuviiyasam bhraataramarthavaccha,

      prabhurmuhuurtaadviraraama raamaha.

Having uttered in about an hour, these meaningful words in this manner to his

younger brother on the need of obedience to his father's will, the magnanimous

and the mighty Rama became silent.

Some how concluding that Rama will not come, Bharata made final attempt and

request Rama to give his Paduakas.  After obtaining the Padukas Bharatha giving

ultimatum to Rama for the final day of fourteenth year.

Slokas 13 to 30 of Chapter 112 of Ayodhyakanda

All the prayers of Bharatha and others failed in persuading Rama to come back

and finally Bharatha demanded Rama’s Padukas.

13. idam raajyam mahaa praajna sthaapaya pratipadya hi,

      Saktimaan asi kaakutstha lOkasya paripaalanE..

competence to save the world!

14. ity uktvaa nyapatad bhraatuh paadayOr bharatah tadaa,

bhRisham sampraarthayaam aasa raaman Evam priyam vadaha.

That Bharata, who was kind-spoken, thus made a fervent appeal to Rama and fell

at his feet.

15. tam ankE bhraataram kRitvaa raamO vacanam abraviit,

Syaamam naina patra aksham matta hamsa svarah svayam.

Placing on his lap, that Bharata of dark hue, with eyes resembling lotus-petals

and having a voice like that of a swan in rut, Rama spoke the following words to

him:

16. aagataa tvaam ivam buddhih svajaa vainayikii ca vaa,

bhrisham usahasE tataa rakshitum pRithiviim api.

" O, my dear brother! You are very much competent to rule the earth, by the

intellect you obtained both inherently and by training. "

17. amaatyaih ca suhRidbhih ca buddhimadbhih ca mantribhih,

Sarva kaaryaaNi sammantrya sumahaanty api kaaraya.

" Take counsel with your ministers, companions and intelligent counsellors and

18. lakshmiih candraad apeyaad vaa himavaan vaa himam tyajEt,

atiiyaat saagarO vElaam na pratijnaam aham pituhu.

" Light may go off from the moon; Himalayan mountain may shake off its snows; the

sea may transgress its shores, but I will never be false to my father's vow! "

19. kaamaad vaa tata lObhaad vaa maatraa tubyam idam kRitam,

na tan manasi kartavyam vartitavyam ca maatRivat.

" My dear brother! Your mother acted thus, for your sake, out of her affection or

ambition. It should not be carried out in your mind. You ought to obey her as

your mother. "

20. Evam bruvaaNam bhartah kausalyaa sutam abraviit,

tEjasaa aaditya samkaaSam pratipac candra darSanam.

Bharata replied (as follows) to Rama, who was speaking as aforesaid and who was

equal to sun by his splendour or to the moon in its first quarter.

21. adhirOha aarya paadaabhyaam paadukE hEma bhuushitE,

Ete hi sarva lOkasya yOga kshEmam vidhaasyataha.

" O, noble brother! Pray mount with your feet on the wooden sandals adorned with

gold! Surely, these will bestow, gain and security to all the people! "

22. sO adhiruhya nara vyaaghrah paadukE hy avaruhya ca,

      praayagccat sumahaa tEjaa bharataaya mahaatmanE.

Rama, the tiger among men, possessing exceptional glory, placing his feet on the

sandals and leaving them, gave them to the magnanimous Bharata.

23. sa paadukE sampraNamya raamam vacanamabraviit,

24. tavaagamanamaakaaNkshan vasanvai nagaraadbahih,

      tava paadukayOrnyastaraajyatantrah paramtapa..

Bowing before the sandals, Bharata spoke the following words to Rama: " O, Rama

the hero and the tormentor of enemies! For fourteen years, I shall wear matted

locks and robes of bark, live on fruits and roots O Rama, and live outside the

city, offering the ruling of the kingdom to your sandals. "

25. caturdaSE tu sampuurNE vaRshE abaani raghuuttama,

na drakshyaami yadi tvaam tu pravEkshyaami gutaaSanam.

" O, Rama! If I do not see you the following day when the fourteenth year has

fully ended, I shall enter the fire once for all. "

26. tatEti ca pratijNaaya tam pariSvajya saadaram,

      Satrughnam ca pariSvajya bharatam cEdamabraviit.

" So be it " promised Rama, embraced that Bharata with affection, took Shatrughna

also in his arms and spoke to Bharata as follows:

27. maataram raksha kaikEyiim maa sOSam kuru taam prati,

mayaa ca siitayaa caiva SaptO si raghusattama.

28. ItyuktvaaSrupariitaakshO bhraataram visasrja ha.

" O Bharata! Protect your mother, Kaikeyi. Do not get angry with her. You are

taken vow thus by me and by Seetha. " speaking thus, Rama with his eyes filled

with tears, bade farewell to his brother.

sa paadukE te bharatah prataapavaan,

The valiant Bharata, who knew righteousness worshipped those sandals which were

well-decorated made a circumambulation to Rama and kept the sandals on the head

of an excellent elephant.

30. atha aanupuurvyaat pratipuujy tam janam,

guruumh ca mantra prakRitiih tathaa anujau,

      vyasarjayad raaghava vamSa vardhanah,

sthitah sva dharmE himavaan iva acalaha.

Rama, the emperor of Raghu dynasty, being firm as a Himalayan rock in abiding in

his own righteousness, greeted those men, in accord with their rank, the host of

his preceptors, ministers, subjects and his brothers and bade farewell to all of

them.

Slokas 1 to 12 and 103 of chapter 128 of Yuddhakanda

After Rama's returning from the forest, Bharatha told that he is returning the

kingdom ruled by him on behalf of Rama and Rama enthroned.

1. birasyanjalimaadhaaya kaikeyyaa nandavadhanah,

Placing his hallowed hands together on his head (as a mark of salutation),

Bharata the enhancer of Kaikeyi's happiness, spoke to the truly brave Rama, his

elder brother (as follows):

2. puujitaa maamikaa maataa dattam raajyamidam mama,

    taddadaami puastubhyam yathaa tvamadadaa mama.

" You gave this kingdom to me and treated my mother's words respectfully. As you

to you, if you, as a Master, would not indeed rule over us, your servants. You

Dear Sirs,

As per Ramayana, King Dasaratha had asked Lord Sri Rama to go to vanavasam for

fourteen years and deputed Bharata, to rule the kingdom. This was done by him on

the demand of kaikeyi, the third wife  of Dasaratha. Lord Rama carried the

instructions of his father and went to Aranyavasam, along with his wife Sita and

brother Lakshmana.

Bharatha, who had come to know the incident late, had approached Sri Rama, to

come back to Ayodhya and take the power, for which Sri Rama had denied. This is

ok.

In the end, after Sita was released by Sri Rama, by killing Ravana, Sri Rama

came back to Ayodhya with all, since the vanavasam period was completed at that

time and ruled the country of Ayodhya, prosperously which was called Rama Rajya.

Now, the doubt is, why SRI Rama had accepted to rule Ayodhya, when Bharatha was

very much there and was appointed by his father Dasaratha. Here one thing should

be noticed- Sri Rama was always obeyed the orders of his father Dasaratha and

performed “ pitru palana. In that case how he has accepted the

ruling of the country. Even if Bharatha wantedly offer also?

I love Sri Rama and worship HIM. But I am not able to understand the logic

behind this doing so by Lord Rama. May be some link/interpretation was there in

Ramayana, which I missed to understand.

Any one in the group may kindly clarify this point.

I love Sri Rama and worship HIM.. But I am not able to understand the logic

behind this doing so by Lord Rama. May be some link/interpretation was there in

Ramayana, which I missed to understand.

Any one in the group may kindly clarify this point.

While saluting my Elder Soul Brother, Dr. Sastry, for his wonderful explanattory

commentary, I wish to add two sentences:

Kakaiyi, and many others, also went along with Bharata to the forest, to request

Rama to come back and rule Ayyodhya. That itself explicitely indicates that

Kakaiyi, after realising her fault and repenting for the same, agreed with

Bharata's contention that Rama is the rightful King of Ayyodhya.

As brother Sastry explained, Dasaratha never ordered Rama to go to forests for

14 years. It was rather conveyed to Rama by Kakaiyi, as the wish of Dasaratha,

saying that Dasaratha himself asked her to convey this.

And, it is true that once one is alienated from the property for mroe than 12 or

13 years, one loses the right over property. Even in the present day's law, it

holds good.

Love and Love alone....

He is firm and steadfast. He is just and

liberal. He is well-versed in the Vedas and in the science of arms. He is unique

in the possession of virtues and matchless in beauty. He is an obedient son, a

kind brother, loving husband, a faithful friend, an ideal king, a merciful

enemy, and a lover of all living beings. All people adore him " .  This was

confirmed by Chaturmukha Brahma.

Bharatha who came back from

his uncle’s place refused to take over the reins of the kingdom of Ayodhya .

He journeyed to the forest and met Sri Rama.  Rama advised him to rule the

country for fourteen years.  Bharatha agreed to do this as a representative of

Rama.  He took along with him the padukas (sandal slippers) of Rama to a town

called Nandi Grama, the out skirts of Ayodhya and installed them on the throne

and ruled Ayodhya from there

as a representative of Rama. While departing with Rama, Bharatha told him “If

I do not see you the following day when the fourteenth year has fully ended, I

shall enter the fire once for allâ€

(I know this, but could not quote the sloka, since the relevant papers from my

book are some how

lost)

So Rama never deviated from dharma and dharma itself is in the shape of Rama.

The primordial word AUM is to be prefixed to all the stotras in our prayers,

where as it is not necessary in case of Rama, since the name of Rama is

considered as AUM.

In such case, let us pray Rama for venturing to discuss about his character.

The original slokas with meaning, connected to the above facts from Ramayana are

given below for those who are interested to read. The slokas might be more, but

only the required one as a test-check is selected, in connection with the above

doubt.

With love and regards,

Sastry

Here one thing

should be noticed- Sri Rama was always obeyed the orders of his father

Dasaratha and performed “ pitru palana. In that case how he has

accepted the ruling of the country. Even if Bharatha wantedly offer also?

I love Sri Rama and worship HIM.. But I am not able to understand the logic

behind this doing so by Lord Rama. May be some link/interpretation was there in

Ramayana, which I missed to understand.

Any one in the group may kindly clarify this point.

Dear Muralikrishna Garu,

Bhakti is eternal.

I am sorry to say whether my writing is bad or my time!

On going through your message, I once again I gone through my views and found to

be in order. Then I attribute to my time!

I have clearly stated that you are aware of the subject and raised doubt (2)

only with the idea to make others have Satsang and that your doubts are

appreciable and should be encouraged for learning more.  As I know the subject

in question, I replied.  There is more for me to know and I can learn from

others by putting such moral questions.  You are in very high position in my

mind and in fact I liked to have an acquaintance with you.

My advice regarding DEBATE is in general to all devotees, since our Hinduism is

vast spread in different parts with the followers of different customs.. I find

in some sites, each member is exchanging views with the other and creating

differences and entering into arguments. That is the reason for my appeal in

general to members and that too with no intension of degrading any one.  I do

not underestimate any member of this holy site. I am after all a devotee.

There is nothing to find fault with you and you need not feel sorry under the

misapprehension that “any body think otherwiseâ€Â  None has either expressed

or touched the subject with me and I gave the details on my own accord and that

too after praying Lord Sreerama.

I once again thank you for making me to recollect a noble and oldest epic, which

I always memorise with Bhakti, in addition to Bhagavatham by our Kavimaharshi

Pothana.

With love and regards,

Sastry

Bharatha who came back from

his uncle’s place refused to take over the reins of the kingdom of Ayodhya .

He journeyed to the forest and met Sri Rama.  Rama advised him to rule the

country for fourteen years.  Bharatha agreed to do this as a representative of

Rama.  He took along with him the padukas (sandal slippers) of Rama to a town

called Nandi Grama, the out skirts of Ayodhya and installed them on the throne

and ruled Ayodhya from there as a representative of Rama.

Dear Sastry garu,

Namaskramulu

I am basically intersted to know many things. From my childhood say 12 or 15 th

year onwards, i used to read Bhagavatam, Ramayanam and Bharatam. Not only these,

I used to read Bhagawath geeta and many more books pertaining to ethics/epics

and other related books. I do understand the things by reading such noval books

and understand the things and use to make my life comfortable with the lessions

I learnt from books.

After seeing the mails of your goodslves and also the mails of Sri Gopi Krishna

garu, I could understand more. Actually I used to think that a Hindu, who

belives in GOD need not particularly to go to temple, very frequently,  since

we worship daily in the mornings. we have idols of all our favorite GODS in

house and perform pooja. But after hearing from Sri Gopi Krishna that the

importantance of going to temple is some divine power is there in the

temples with vibrations that we receive, since the gyeties/idols of GOD are

either installed by themselves or by some pivous people  installing with

mantras and other powers. In fact I never know this. This is is a new

information for me. I have got one or two more doubts like this, but those are

not subject to debates or unhealthy arguments. If any suitable answer is

available, it is well and good.

In case the moderators of the site permit me only I will put into the forum..

But sastry garu, I have received/accepted your views, very happily and thank

you very much for the same.

Thank you sir,

Yours- love
