How Can Desires Cover Us?

The inner craving for contact born pleasures, impressions left by them, desires,

longing, greed, these all are the main illness. The contact born pleasures do

not wait, if you give up it's craving then it is extremely straightforward work.

This wanting of sensual enjoyment, this desire for objects of enjoyment, the

desire for hoarding, the desire for honour, the desire for prestige, the desire

for rest and relaxation - these all arise in front of us and they go away. These

desires sometimes get fulfilled and other times they remain unfulfilled.

Sometimes suddenly it is fulfilled and other times it is goes away. However, we

remain AS-IS, there is no modification in the Self (swaroop). If we become

established in our Self (swaroop), then desires will go away, and if we wipe out

the desires, then we will become naturally established in the Self (swaroop). Of

these two, what ever you want, you must do. By having a quest for Truth, as well

as, by giving up the false, one can attain the Truth (Sat, Real).

Craving for that happiness which is born and later destroyed must be

wiped out. One has to do at least this much work. Contact born

pleasure itself does not stay at all time, and it takes us away from the

happiness arising from That eternal-at all times existing Paramatma! This is so

meaningless ! Even such contact born pleasures you are unable to give up, then

what can you give up!

The desire for happiness is born and it perishes, but the Self (I) is

not born, nor does it perish. The desires come in you, you are not in

the desires. You are all pervasive. The desire is not - in other

words, you are in all countries, the desire is in one country. You are

in all time zones, whereas desires are is in one. And whether desires

are there or not, there is no change in you. You reamin AS IS. The

desires are simply held by you. The desires have no strength to hold on to you.

When you are doing satsang (listening to spiritual discourse,

associating with holy people) then desires do not remain, therefore one can

experience that the very Essence (tattva) remains AS-IS. But when one gets

desires, then this realization does not remain. Therefore the question arises

that the sentiments that are there, while we are engaged in satsang such

sentiments do not remain at other times. In reality, that Essence (tattva) is at

all times, constantly remains AS-IS. Whether you listen to satsang or not, or

engage in bad company, the Truth remains AS-IS, it never perishes. But your

sight goes towards the temporary (unreal, asat), then that unreal begins to

dominate over you and you begin to see as if the Real (Sat, Existing) is not

there. That which is there at some time and not other times, how can it be real

(sat)? The real remains all the time AS-IS. The craving for the unreal, has no

capacity / strength to hide the real; because the real is all pervasive. It is

not that a base thing can hide a great thing, or cover it. " Aavrutam

jnaanametena. .. " (Gita 3/39). " This knowledge is covered due to desires: by

saying this it means that jnaan (knowledge) does not become covered, our sight

(drishti) is covered. Just like when

clouds come, one cannot see the Sun, then we say the Sun is hidden. But as such,

the Sun is not hidden, our eyes are covered. The sun is larger than even the

largest planet, then how can the Sun be hidden by a few clouds? Similarly when

desires arise, we believe that we have come under the sway of desires, that

desires have defeated us. In reality, this is not the case. How can desires

cover us? Desires are worthless, whereas you are great ! - " nityah sarvagatah

sthaanurachloyam sanaatanah " (Gita 2/24). You are the know of the

desires that arise and later perish. He who is the knower of that which arises

and perishes, he is Imperishable. He is great ! That which is born and later

destroyed is small, But that which is the knower of the birth and death of

desires, he is Great!
