78. Good company determines character

Tell me your company and I shall tell you what you are. When you associate

yourself with ephemeral things, the results also are bound to be so. You should

develop friendship with Divinity, which alone is true and eternal. Divinity is

very much present in you. The external world is subject to change. The world is

nothing but a combination of matter. Everything in this world is transitory.

Nothing is permanent. The unseen Atmic principle alone is true and eternal.

The company one keeps determines one's character. People join groups where they

can freely express their innate nature. You must carefully choose the company

you are in. Consider this example: A length of string is a worthless thing; no

one will wear it in the hair or place it reverentially on an idol of God. But,

when it associates itself with a few fragrant flowers, then women decorate their

hair with it and devotees place the garland of flowers on the idol they adore.

Evil company demeans and debases an individual. Take the example of fire. It is

considered holy and is religiously worshipped in many orthodox homes where the

scriptures are chanted and provide the guidelines of life. On the other hand,

when fire enters a bail or a rod of iron, it has to suffer hammer blows in

plenty while the rod or the ball is shaped into some tool by a human being.

Attachment to the iron brings about this calamity for the highly venerated fire.
