Self Worth

K S VENKATARAMAN

Self Worth is a feeling of confidence in yourself that you are a good and useful

person.

Self Worth is a concept each individual builds about himself or herself. To say

that it is all the same for everybody or it has to be always high-flown, is not

correct.

Everything is not the same for all even at the time of birth. There are

differences in inherent qualities. And then, there are differences we brought

upon ourselves by our conscious actions.

What if I commit an unforgivable sin? If so, even if nobody knows it, my

self-worth is bound to take a beating. Can we say, in spite of my sin my

self-worth should be high or undisturbed or equal to that of all others?

We cannot afford to treat self worth as some imagination or wishful thinking. It

is the outcome of an objective personal evaluation. It is a valuable guide

shaped by ourselves for us. It may be a perception but based on definite things.

It is true that people who value their self worth greatly are able to transact

successfully with others. This is a fact in the area of Human Relations. This is

because Self Worth, when it is positive, confers one with self confidence,

courage and willingness to interact.

Self worth is not something what one gets from being born in a rich or

high-level family; it is not acquired by one's color, caste or religion; it is

what one builds for himself with the help of the talents the Nature has given

him.

The most important quality that enhances one's self worth is `Truthfulness'.

Truthfulness is valued not for the sake of the society or others. It is what

enhances our inner worth. If we lose it, we would come down in our own

estimation; there is no need for anybody else to downgrade us. That is why,

Thiruvalluvar has said, that one should not deliberately opt for falsehood; if

he does, his own mind would punish him. (Than nenju arivathu poyyarka; poithapin

than nenje thannai chudum. Thirukkural 293)

Adherence to Truth when coupled with universal love would enhance the self worth

of the individual. It would give the person courage to face any adverse

situation in life; it would enable him to maintain equanimity even if he attains

great name and fame. Truth and Love would attract all other good qualities and

others would seek his goodwill and accept his leadership.

If my Self Worth should be high, I should consciously work for it and deserve

it. I should opt for discipline, hard work, friendliness, training and

development, respect for others' feelings and talents and so on. I should start

achieving good things. By this conscious method, my self worth and achievements

would promote each other and spiral up.
