95. Service to fellowmen

Human body is meant to serve others, not to indulge in selfish deeds. Due to

selfishness, one indulges in many sinful activities. Eschew selfishness, take to

selfless service. Give up attachment to the body. Become attached to the Self.

Understand that the same Atma (Self) exists in everybody. Though you find myriad

bulbs glowing, the current that is passing through them is the same. Bodies are

like bulbs, the principle of the Atma is the current that is present in them.

With such a feeling of oneness, make efforts to alleviate the suffering of your

fellowmen.

The Divine Call is not to deceive or mislead. It is to transform, reconstruct,

and reform. It is to make the person useful and serviceable for the society; to

affirm in the individual the unity of all beings in God. The person who has

undergone this samskara (refinement) becomes a humble servant of those in need

of help. This is the stage of Paropakara (selfless service). Service done with

this kind of reverence and selflessness prepares man to realize the One that

pervades the Many.

Riches melt away only when you spend them. But the span of years you can live on

earth is shortened every moment, whether you like it or not. Therefore, you must

feel urgency in accomplishing great tasks in life. The intellect is a special

gift that has been offered to you, so you may know yourself. Like the mirror is

used to look at your face and set right your blemishes, use the intellect to

discharge your duties in life perfectly.
