The Greatest Enemy - Mahabharatam - Santi parvam

Ekah satrur na dwitheeyosti satru

Ajnaantulyah purushasya Raajan

Yenaavutah kurute samprayukto

Ghorani karmaani sudaaruraani

There is only one enemy to human being and none is equal to him and that is

'ignorance'. Having been caught in the grip of ignorance and being instigated,

human being is committing heinous deeds and crimes.

Paraasara Maharshi said in Santi Parvam of Mahabharatam that there might be many

enemies to a human being, but the enemy, who does the greatest harm, is

'ignorance'. Due to ignorance only, the human being is caught in the vicious

cycle of birth and death.

Due to ignorance only, human being is failed to recognise his true nature and

identifying himself with the body, which is inanimate, ignoring the fact that he

is Atma-swarupa.

One should not leave behind enemies, debts and diseases as these will be after

the human being always. With the help of Knowledge and Detachment, Jiva should

root out ignorance and realise one's own Self or attain Moksham.
