Kartika Masam 2009 begins on October 19 and ends on November 16 for Telugu and Kannada calendars. The month is considered auspicious by both Lord Shiva and Vishnu devotees. *Importance of Karthika masam* Lord Vishnu goes to sleep on Ashadha suddha ekadashi and wakes-up on Karthika suddha ekadashi. Lord Shiva killed Tripurasuras on Karthika pournami and protected the world. In this month Ganga (Godess of river Ganges) enters in to all rivers, canals, ponds and wells and makes them as pious as Ganga. Kartika Masam Purnima (full moon day) is on November 2 and Kartika Masam Amavasi is on November 16 (No moon day).
