VOICE OF THE RISHIS - 6

ANIRVINNA SSADAA MARSHEE

- ShriVishnushasranamam, 4th sloka.

In every temple and at every place of Vaishnava Worship, and

in Satyanarayana Vratam etc., it is a compulsory practice to chant

the Thousand Names of Lord Vishnu. This is called Vishnu Sahasra

Naama. These thousand names describe the various glorious attributes

of Lord Vishnu.

The present quote " ANIRVINNA SSADA MARSHEE " describes the

Lord as " Composed Unperturbed--Anirvinna-- and Ever--sadaa--Cheerful-

-Harshee--. So Lord Vishnu is said to be ever in composed and ever

cheerful " One may ask, so what? It may be argued that He is the

Lord, so can afford to be composed and cheerful.

Now the answer. The devotee chanting the thousand attributes

of the Lord does not signify a method of cajolery of the Lord to win

Him over. The underlying significance is reciting the thousand names-

-shasranamam-- is to remind ourselves of the praisworthy attributes

of the Lord. These thousand great attributes are mentioned in order

to make the devotees cultivate the same great sacred qualities, like

compassion, forgiveness, generosity, etc., on one's own life.

Lord is here described as " Composed, unperturbed and ever

cheerful " and this suggests that men in their daily lives also,

should be level headed keeping up even temper, " sang froid " as it is

called and attend to the daily duties in a cheerful way. Even temper

and geniality are thus stressed as Godly qualities to be adopted by

man also.
