Goddess Gayatri is described as Brahman or the Supreme Truth. She is the Mother

of the Vedas and the goddess of knowledge. Those scriptures and texts that are

associated with Goddess Gayatri give her the supreme position. She is also

believed to be the form given to the Gayatri Mantra.

Goddess Gayatri is usually presented with two hands and she is beautifully

dressed – a red sari. She holds a kamandalu and Vedas in her hands. She also has

a halo of Surya (sun god).

Goddess Gayatri is also depicted as having five faces and each has a different

color – pearl, lapis lazuli, gold, sapphire and white. She is also believed to

have a third eye like Lord Shiva. Her vehicle is a swan and she is seated on a

lotus. She wears gold crown and is bedecked with moon on her head.

She is explained as the Supreme Consciousness and is believed to be the force

behind creation which she was able to fulfill by praying to Lord Shiva.

She is believed to have given birth to the Vedas when dharma, devotion and

morality disappeared from the earth due to excessive indulgence in heavenly

pleasures. The Vedas were then used to preach devotion and righteousness on the

earth.

A popular form of Goddess Gayatri is Mother Savitri.

Some scriptures indicate that during early morning hours, Goddess Gayatri is

worshipped as Kumari (Virgin) and is also known as Braahmi (power of Brahma). At

noon she is worshipped as Vaishnavi and is the power of Brahma. In the evening

she is worshipped as Rudrani and it the power of Shiva.

The Supreme Consciousness or Brahman is beyond imagination and cannot be

captured into a form. But human mind is obsessed with form and therefore

attempts to give form to the Supreme Truth. Goddess Gayatri is one such attempt.
