VOICE OF THE RISHIS - 16

ASWADDHA SSARVA VRUKSHANAMM

-- BHAGAVADGITA

In the most sacred book Bhagavad Gita in Vibhuti Yoga

Chapter, Lord Krishna goes on relating how His Holy image is passed

on into certain selected creatures, selected seasons of the year, or

selected plants. Those mentioned in this Chapter as carrying the

reflection sacred Godly powers are worthy of our consideration and

priorities.

Lord Krishna says in Gita 'I am the moon among the stars, I am

the month Margasirsha among twelve months " and even goes to extent of

saying I am Vasuki, the deadliest of the snakes " . And it is in this

context He says, " I am Aswaddha tree among the innumerable plants. "

Let us ponder about why this " Aswaddha " , pepaul tree is

reckoned as the holiest of all with Lord's image or preference. In

Homa, the Holy Fire, the twigs of Aswaddaha only are to be offered as

fuel (samidha) for it is stated that the holy fumes purify the

ecological order. Again according to the Buddhist scriptures Gautama

became the Buddha, while penancing under Bodhi Tree. The trunk of

the tree is white and it is said to have several medicinal values.

Further research studies on this plant would certainly yield

several secrets why of all the trees Lord has equated Himself with

this Aswaddha tree.
