VOICE OF THE RISHIS - 21

APOVIE BHESHAJAM

--Vedic saying

" Water (Apo) is a great cure (bheshajam) – In Vedas we find

several verses praising the value of water. Rishis of yore had

their Asharams or dwelling places, only near riversides. Everyday

they used to have river baths waist deep and to offer obeisances to

Varuna, Lord of Water and also to the rising sun at dawn and setting

sun in the evenings. Thus river waters and the ascetic living were

almost entwined in nature.

After bathing in rivers, seas, or even swimming pools, we

recognize how exhilarating the effect such bath provides. No other

effect gives such a feeling or rejuvenation as bath gives.

Therein lies the hidden secret of medicinal powers of the

water. " Apo vie bheshajam " . Water has curative (medicinal) effect,

is a saying not to be taken slightly in this modern complex world.

Going after medicines and more medicines, making man entirely

dependent on medicines is degrading.

Nature cure developed by a German Louise Kuhne into a

systematic science is now known as Hydrotherapy. Certain water

springs, waterfalls are said to have curative value in them.

Civilization, Indus, Nile, etc., flowered only by the

riversides. River waters even looked at constantly gives a soothing

effect.

Attributing curative effect to water, calling water as medicine

is neither exaggeration nor unscientific. Thus goes the Vedic

concept.
