VOICE OF THE RISHIS – 25

AYURVAI GHRITAM

" Ghee (Ghritam) or melted butter brings longevity " Ghee is of two

kinds. Cow ghee made of cows milk and ghee of the she buffalo's

milk. It should be noted that " Goghritam " or cow ghee is only

referred to when referred to in Vedas or Ayurveda. Cow is

considered to be the holiest of all creatures by the Hindus. Cow

occupies a very significant place and is worshipped equal to that of

God. And several times it is repeated as a great wish that " Go

Brahmanebhya Subhamastu Nityam " , cow and the Brahmin (the seeker

after Brahma) be happy for ever "

Cow ghee is offered in the Holy fire, `Homa'. And ghee of the she

buffalo is tabooed. This is how distinction between `satva'

and `tamas' is made.

While ghee is now decried as saturated fat causing harm to the heart

by the modern science, it should be asked how the saints and sages

of yore in India lived for hundreds of years existing only on the

products of cow. Cow milk, cow butter, cow curds (yoghurt) are

considered as main ingredients of the " Panchaamrita " in the holy

scripts.

Lord Krishna is called Gopala, cowherd who ate enormously the dairy

products of the cow.

The adage (cow) ghee helps in longevity cannot be questioned by the

evidence we see around at present. May the counter part of cow ghee

namely buffalo ghee may prove inimical.

Greater in-depth studies are needed of " Goghritam " to arrive at the

authenticity of this age-old concept.
