VOICE OF THE RISHIS – 28

" EERSHO MRITAM MANAHA "

--Atharvana Veda 75-18-2

The Vedic saying in the simplest from decries jealousy, as a

mental quality and reminds us of its danger. Jealousy (Eersho)

causes death to man. It causes death of mind. Eersho means

jealousy causes mental (manaha), death (mritam). This signifies the

danger of the negative feelings of jealousy as it brings about a

cessation (mritam) to the mental process (manaha). In other words,

it may be said that jealousy ever leads to mental death.

Modern psychiatrists support this view scientifically, how a

man's mind colored or tainted green with feelings of intolerance, to

understand or appreciate other's progress or prosperity, would be

totally blind to assess the plus points in other success.

Our mind progresses only when it's horizon expands with empathy

in a universal way without inhibitions of color creed or clime.

Hence Swami Vivekananda tells " all expansion is life, and

contraction is death " . Every jealousy has its origin in several

inhibitions. Hence this Vedic text ordains that man should have a

free and uninhibited mind. Prejudices or an envious feeling always

mars the process of one's mind. And the saying " Eersho mritam

manaha " . Every feeling of jealousy leads to the death of mind, is a

great warning to man that he should eschew those feelings, if he

cares for his progress.
