Guest guest
Back in the 1950s when Yogi Ramsuratkumar had his intense desire for spiritual enlightenment, he started approaching several Gurus in the south. he visited Ramana Maharishi, Aurobindo, and Papa Ramdas also once. But he could not make up his mind on who to take as his Guru. Once Yogi also attended a talk by Jiddu Krishnamurty. In that talk, Jiddu remarked, " whether one says Coca Cola or Hare Rama, its the same " !! Yogi was taken aback by this, as he was more or less converging on Papa Ramdas as his Guru. Ramdas, was constantly repeating the " Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram " mantra. But Yogi was always dressed up as a beggar, and only intellectuals would usually attend Jiddu's talks, who himself used to be well dressed etc. Yogi didnt get a chance to meet Jiddu or talk to him during the talk or after the talk. Later Yogi rused to Jiddu's residence and tried to get a glimpse of him. But he was not allowed apparently by the gate-keepers. But, suddenly Jiddu came out of his room and asked Yogi to be let inside. Jiddu spontaneously told him not to worry. Jiddu said, " both what I say and what Ramdas says is the same, but you would realise it by experience some day! " Yogi later explained that Jiddu used to talk the " formless " (nirguna) aspect while Ramdas used to talk about the " infinite " (saguna) aspect. Mere chanting of a mantra without applying the mind, would not yield much progress. One has to be initiated by a bonafide Guru and should repeat the mantra with total trust in the mantra and the Guru and without any carelessness or arrogance. Yogi later attained to the highest state after taking formal initiation from Papa Ramdas and reached the state in just 1 week of repetition of the mantram day and night. Swami Ramdas, asked Yogi to leave the ashram later and proceed to Tiruvannamalai, where Yogi spent almost 40yrs, leading the life of a beggar, talking strange but divine things to people and sometimes displaying divine miracles, and instilling god-awareness in the lowest society of people. It was only in 1993 that some relatively influential people got aware of Yogi and decided to build an ashram for him. Yogi would always only say " my father alone exists, nothing else, nobody else " . Kanchi Paramacharya used to speak very highly of Yogi. Once he sent a personal message and asked Yogi to meet him at Kanchipuram. But when Yogi arrived, they both did not speak a word, but remained in total silence facing each other for about 1hr or so. Later, Paramacharya gave permission for Yogi to leave, and Yogi also left. Apparently, later a close attendant of Paramacharya said that they both had a long discussion, but not through words. Paramacharya had suggested to Yogi, to proceed to Govindapuram, but Yogi had suggested that " for this beggar Tiruvannamalai is enough " , and Paramacharya acknowledged that. I have had the opportunity to meet Yogi 3-4 times, once in 1993 and then 2-3 times in 2000 and 2001 just before his Mahasamadhi. Today the visitors to the ashram have increased, and there are a few highly dedicated spiritual aspirants in the ashram, whom Yogi still guides in mysterious ways.
