Is there a restriction on recital of gayatri after sunset or at night? I had read a book of Swami Chinmayananda long back in which he advised that Gayatri may not be recited after sunset.

Also is it necessary that Gyatri should be recited only formally at the time of Sandhya Vandana or can it be used for nornam japa.

Subha Madam,

I am sorry to say this but according to the shastras

only the males of brahman, Khsatriya and Vaishya

castes are eligible to recite the Gayatri. The females

and Shudras will derive the benefit. So if in your

family if anyone recites the Gayatri sincerely you

will definitely be benefitted.

Regards from a brother,

Jagannath

Dear Dev,

Gayatri is actually to be recited thrice a day,

morning, afternoon and sunset. I don't know but I

recite Gayatri at other times also as it is considered

to be the Veda Mata.

Another interesting thing is that those who have had

their upanayana must also recite the Gayatri

Shaapmochana Mantra as Gayatri is under the curse of

Brahma (the other I don't remember, Vasistha perhaps).

This mantra is available in page 100 of the Bengali

" Purohit Darpan " . Anyone with access to any branch of

the Ramakrishna Math can request the Pujari Maharaj to

give it. I was able to locate this only last Sunday.

There is a very good book by Swami Mukhyananda, " OM,

Gayatri and Sandhya " . It is published by Ramakrishna

Mission, Chennai. You can go through it. You can also

read the Gayatri section of the book " Hindu Dharma " by

Swami Chandrasekharendra Saraswati at

www.kamakoti.org.

There is also a very voluminous book by the Gayatri

Organisation at Haridwar. I will try to get the

details.

Regards, and hope this helps.
