Dear List

Further to a question about the usage of terms: Monism and

Non-dualism by Swami Vivekananda, our Sister Gayatriprana

has produced a masterful analysis.

NON-DUALISM IN SWAMI VIVEKANANDA’S TEACHINGS:

HIS USE OF THE WORDS ADVAITA, NON-DUALISM AND MONISM

(by Sister Gayatriprana)

September 29, 2002

In a recent letter Sri T.P. Bagchi, commenting on part 121 of Swami

Vivekananda on the Vedas and Upanishads, raised the issue of the use of the

word monism in #16. He drew to our attention Swami Ranganathanandaji’s

emphasis that monism, meaning one, automatically tends to suggest two,

three, etc, i.e. duality or plurality; whereas advaita or non-dualism

totally denies the possibility of the existence of any second entity

whatsoever. To us, it seems that this is an important distinction,

especially for the sadhaka who is seeking to transcend discursive thought

and directly experience Reality or What Is, beyond any names or forms

whatsoever............
