It has become a common trait, inherited from the westerners, to refer to the " psyche " as the soul. But in India and Hinduism, the " psyche " (subtle) is different from the body (gross) which are both different from the " soul " (the eternal and all pervading) About the Lord of Death even getting confused for a moment over the multiple clones or look-alikes, the question just does not arise. The story is good in a way to highlight the " ego " part. But the Lord of Death is also the Lord of Dharma or Virtue and Righteousness.
