Guest guest
Dear Sri Bagchi You have made some valid points. Spirituality in East and West. Spirituality should transcend ideas of East and West. But what I suppose Brad was implying is that it is 'idea of divinity within' that attracts the attention of a Westerner more than any other aspect of Hinduism. My experiences in this regard are in absolute agreement with this conclusion. Caste system. Most list members who are familiar with Swami Vivekananda's works should be aware of the comments passed by Swamji in regards to the Caste system. At one stage he even suggested that it was this rigid caste system that in a way helped Hinduism survive the most serious onslaught from outside. But as you are aware Swami Vivekananda always spoke in 'context'. (Who he was dealing with and under what circumstances he was speaking must always be kept in mind, when reading his works). The context in which I find myself operating is seeing Hinduism being projected in UK schools as = caste system. The Western youngsters and the Hindu youngsters go away thinking Hinduism = caste + worshipping animals + polytheism. Repeating the name of our mentor, sometimes with a little thump, I try and ensure that the correct picture gets across : ) jay
