Guest guest
Pranams Jagannath Thanks for taking up the medical side of the issue of celibacy. But tell me do you know why Thakur spoke about 12 years being the period required for celibacy whereby a special nerve called Medha develops in a person which opens up and takes a man to complete mastery and self realisation. Thakur would not be wrong but is there a medical explanation ? Regards Dev Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. Sign up now
Guest guest
Dear Dev, There is no medical evidence of what Thakur spoke of. But then Thakur did not utter any lie even in jest so we cannot ignore this (or any) statement of his. Perhaps this relates to the sukshma sharira or the subtle body. The chinese systems of medicine speak of this subtle body which forms the energy framework on which the physical body forms. It is almost an exact replica of the physical body though the positions of the main organs may be different. As per our scriptures, celibacy tranforms the sexual energy " tejus " into spiritual energy " ojas " . It is an established fact that persons observing brahmacharya (celibacy in thoughts, words and deeds) develop intuitive knowledge and a very sharp memory which help them delve into the inner meanings of scriptures and have spiritual experiences. Probably this is because of the " medha nadi " that Thakur speaks of. We must remember that there exists a world beyond the material and physical which saints and seers tap by virtue of their sincere spiritual practices. This is all I have to offer Dev, I don't know if it will satisfy you. Guest guest
- DEVINDER AHUJA Ramakrishna Friday, December 06, 2002 05:13 [sri Ramakrishna] 12 years...special nerve...what did thakur mean Pranams Jagannath Thanks for taking up the medical side of the issue of celibacy. Regards Dev ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Dev While waiting for a response to your question from Sri Jagannath let me comment on what presentation I make on this theme at Universities. I suggest that the sex act is very powerful that it makes the individual identify very strongly with the body rather than with the spirit -- hence it is considered to be a major distraction (this comes from the teachings of Swami Ashokananda). Secondly I specify that it is not the discharge of bodily fluids but the fact that we dissipate a great deal of very essential subtle nervous energy in the process. It is this very energy that we need to make spiritual progress. Hence preserving it for long periods becomes an important austerity - Essential - I specify 'essential' for spiritual experiences. This essential aspect comes from the teachings of Swami Vivekananda and Sri Ramakrishna. When presented in this light the youngsters would accept the idea --- but I doubt if this would make them practise celibacy. regards jay
Guest guest
Dear Jay Thank you so much for that insight. On the last sentence of your mail, I think the decision to practise celibacy is finally given only to the rarest and select few. It comes with grace earned after many austerities over many births. You are carrying the message. The fittest will absorb it. It is anyway not for the masses. Pranams Dev Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. Guest guest
Bramacharya (celibacy) should be the practice of male and female until marriage. Within marriage the couple will work out a loving relationship that is right for both, with meditation and personal worship as daily practice. Refined thinking and the purification of the gross and subtle nervous system are the results of celibacy. Om Siva
