Organ Transplantation

The question of organ transplantation brings out the fundamental

difference between Hinduism and other world religions. Hinduism is a

personal religion. So, whether someone agrees with transplantation or

not is his own belief. If he agrees with it, then go and get it. If

he does not agree with it, then don't get it. But do not enforce your

own ideas on others.

The first meeting of Sri Ramakrishna with M in the Kathamrita brings

out this idea. M is asked if he believed in God with form or without

form. M answered that he believed in God without form. Sri

Ramakrishna told him that that was good, and also warned him not to

believe that his way is the only way. That led to M's first and only

argument with Sri Ramakrishna.

Panels of " experts " can be made up very easily and they will lecture

profusely. But, it is for the individual to realize what he believes

in.

Namaste,

The issue is more analogous to Arjuna's state of 'dharma-

saMmUDha-chetAH' than to M.'s approach to Thakur.

The Gita's answer is:

yaH shaastravidhimutsR^ijya vartate kaamakaarataH .

na sa siddhimavaap{}noti na sukhaM na paraaM gatim.h .. 16\.23..

[ " 23. Ignoring the precept of the scriptures, he who acts under the

impulsion of passion,-he does not attain perfection, nor happiness,

nor the supreme Goal. " ]

tasmaachchhaastraM pramaaNaM te kaaryaakaaryavyavasthitau .

GYaatvaa shaastravidhaanokta.n karma kartumihaarhasi .. 16\.24..

[ " 24. Therefore, the scripture is your authority as regards the

determination of what is to be done

and what is not to be done. After understanding (your) duty as

presented by scriptural injunction,

you ought to perform (your duty) here. " ]

Taittiriya Upanishad [1:11:3-6] has this exhortation:

9. Now if to thee a doubt as to a deed, or a doubt as to conduct,

should occur, as the brahmanas there -- who are thoughtful, zealous,

well-versed, not hard (at heart), desirous of Dharma -- would act

in such matters, so there shalt thou act.

10. Now as to the accused: as the brahmanas there -- who are

thoughtful, zealous, well-versed, not hard (at heart), desirous of

Dharma -- would act in such matters, so there shalt thou act.

11. This is the direction; this the advice; this the secret of Vedas;

this the command;

thus shall devotion be, and thus verily (all) this shalt thou observe.

To one who has total surrender to the Supreme, the

doubt of how to act would not arise.

Dear Sunderh,

That's a good answer, very learned and correct. But I

don't disagree with somdev. He has been somewhat

blunt, that's all.

It's maya that forces us to elongate our life with

transplants. If we are able to conquer our attachments

and develop self-surrender and vairagya there is no

need for all that.

If we lead a good life and accept shortcomings as our

own karma, there is absolutely no cause for panic.

Thakur knows what is best for us.

Thakur has promised (and Holy Mother too) that for

those who are sincerely devoted, this is their last

life. We, the children of Thakur and Ma, simply need

not worry.

As Nagmahashay said " Mother is more kind than Thakur " .

Thakur himself was kindness personified and if Mother

is even more compassionate, then our problems are

solved, isn't it?

Regards

Jagannath
