Guest guest
Namaste I have had a look at the " Manu smriti " and it mainly talks about different duties of different castes. As we know caste system is not applicable in todays' world, so how relevant is the Laws of manu in this day and age? Also if its not valid for today's society than shouldn't we propose new Laws that are applicable for current times? Any ideas please?? Guest guest
Hello Manish, I think Manu's laws about the caste system are applicable today as well. You must bear in mind that one's caste is not decided by the family he is born into, but rather by the kind of nature one has....which is reflected by the kind of work one does or has an inclination to do. Thus caste system is not based on birth but on one's nature. It is for this caste system that those laws must have been made nad therefore are applicable even today, Jai Gurudev, Hiral --- " shree_manish <shree_manish " <shree_manish wrote: > > Namaste > > I have had a look at the " Manu smriti " and it mainly > talks about different duties of different castes. Guest guest
To Manish and Hiral, As this list is devoted to the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda, why not look up and see what Swamiji has said about the laws of Manu and the meaning of caste in Indian history? His Works are replete with passages about it, and there is also much on the web. Respectfully, Yogeshananda

I am wondering whether " the kind of nature one has " and " the kind of work one does " are fixed at birth by pre-existing (pre-natal) karmas, or are they determined later in life according to aptitude by decision of the individual? Only in the latter case would caste be by choice rather than birth. Yours, Shivaram
