The people who drafted our constitution, Ambedkar in particular, actually burnt " Manu Smriti " in public, dismissing that as racist and partisan. Typically throughout history, the people have followed what the ruler follows (yatha Raja, tatha Praja). Ashoka embraced Buddhism and soon it became the hottest religion and widespread. In my opinion, whether we follow the Manu Smriti or not, we have to follow the " Bhagavatha Dharmam " which is what Narada tells Yudhistra, as spelt out in the Bhagavatam. Even if we follow Manu dharma sastram verbatim, at best Heaven is possible but only probable. But if we follow Bhagavatha dharmam even partly, we are assured to reach the lotus feet of the Lord. It is truly secular, and can practised by everyone and the success is " pratyaksham " , (so many saints have reached the highest state following that). Just as a pot of water has no relevance when everything is submerging in a deluge, all the sastras and vedas have no use for one who has attained the highest state.
