Guest guest
Dear Devotees, Is there a Ramakrishna Math recommended translation(english)(or commentary) of the Bhagavad Gita? I have read only online versions of the Gita so far and have only recently purchased " Bhagavad Gita As it is " by Swami Prabhupada. Thanks in advance, Harish. Guest guest
HArish, One of the most " readable " translations I've seen is the book by Swami Chidbhavananda. The xlation by Swami Tapasyananda is another good one. You can buy both from Sri Ramaksrishna Math, Chennai (http://www.sriramaksrishnamath.org) Girish On Thu, 3 Apr 2003, harish_gadde wrote: > Dear Devotees, > > Is there a Ramakrishna Math recommended translation(english)(or > commentary) of the Bhagavad Gita? Guest guest
Dear Harish, There is a translation by Swami Tapasyananda. This comes in a pocket edition. The original shloka and a translation is given. There is no commentary. There is a " free flowing " translation by Swami Prabhavananda and Christopher Isherwood. This does not have the original shlokas. Again, there is no detailed commentary. And now, there are available - lectures on the Gita given by Revered Swami Ranganathanandaji. These are in 3 volumes. He delivered these lectures in Hyderabad around 1990. I am currently reading the 1st volume and I am finding them truly wonderful. The commentary is very useful. Swamiji tries to compare what gita says with what the modern findings in science (physics, biology, psychology etc.) have to say. I think you can order these from www.vedanta.com or from www.sriramakrishnamath.org There are lots of other translations done by other Swamis of the Ramakrishna Math. They include translations by two previous Presidents (Swami Vireswarananda and Swami Gambhirananda). Hope this was helpful. Best wishes, Ashish --- harish_gadde <harish_gadde wrote: > Dear Devotees, > > Is there a Ramakrishna Math recommended > translation(english)(or > commentary) of the Bhagavad Gita?
