Guest guest
Origin of 'Guru Purnima' Vyas was born on the full moon day (Purnima) of the month of Asadh (Hindu Calendar). (it is on Sunday the 13th of July). The Hindus offer highest dignity to Vyas as the author of many of the Hindu scriptures (including the Mahabharat) and as the one who codified the Vedas. Hence he is called Veda Vyas. 'Purnima' signifies complete illumination and Vyas Purnima signifies spiritual illumination. Vyas is considered to be the Guru of all time. The day is therefore called Guru Purnima and not only Vyas Purnima. Guru/Shishya (spiritual teacher/student) parampara (tradition) is celebrated by all Hindus in various ways. All sectarian movements will use this day to pay special tribute to the gurus of their traditions. jay
