In Vedanta and the West #123, Jan-Feb 1957 is a conversation with Swamis Turiyananda and Shivananda recorded at Almora in 1915 by Swami Raghavananda and translated by Swami Prabhavananda. Concerning free will, Swami Turiyananda says: " You can exercise free will in two ways: either by identifying yourself with him or by surrendering yourself. As long as you keep yourself apart from God, you have no freedom of the will. " This would seem to mean that you only act by the force of samskaras, or every action is simply a re-action of the gunas -- until realization of either Impersonal Brahman (identifying yourself with him) or Personal God (surrendering yourself).
