Guest guest
Haribol! I have read in several Vedanta sources of the impurity of garlic. But no where have I found a reason. In western nutrition it is recognized that garlic is almost a panacea. Please enlighten me as to why garlic is cursed. " Purity is absolutely the basic work, the bed-rock upon which the whole Bhakti-building rests. Cleansing the external body and discriminating the food are both easy, but without internal cleanliness and purity,..... " makes clear distinction between internal and external purity. One has to use discrimination with food items like garlic that excite the senses are not recommended. More importantly greater emphasis has to be paid to internal purity. =======response about Sri Ramakrishna being an incarnation===== Everything that the undersigned has studied about the life and teachings of Sri Ramakrishna suggests to him that Sri Ramakrishna is not only an Avatar but the most comprehensive avatar the world has witnessed. jay Vivekananda Centre London

Guest guest
- Jagannath Chatterjee vivekananda Thursday, October 30, 2003 02:54 Garlic Dear Friends, Garlic and Onion are used in Ayurveda as aphrodisiacs. Hence our shastras advice against Onion and Garlic for those who wish to follow the spiritual path and/or remain celibates. (Sri Ramakrishna used to advise against ghee). However I don't think cooked Garlic and Onion should cause any problem. Yes, Garlic or lasuna and also Onion have other medicinal properties . Taken in small quantities as prescribed by an Ayurved for deficiencies in the system is not prohibited. Regards Jagannath. Guest guest
Hello Michael Garlic and onions are considered to be Tamasic. It is known like that because they will create Tamas prakruti, i.e it will cause excitation of senses which will make it difficult to concentrate all 5 senses at one point which is important ingredient in Dhyan. regards, paritosh and vaishali dave. --- Michael Bowes <rmichaelbowes wrote: Dear Stephen, I believe that garlic is considered to be rajasic.
