Guest guest
Dear List members Two of our colleagues from the London Interfaith Centre plan to visit Sri Lanka and Bangalore at the end of November to explore ideas of Interfaith. Are there any list members in Sri Lanka or Bangalore who can help co-ordinate their work? regards jay Vivekananda Centre London
Guest guest
I don’t actually live in Srilanka, but I am from Srilanka. I lived in Srilanka until age of 13. There are four religions in Srilanka, Buddhists (majority), Hindus, Christians and Muslims (minority). I lived in Jaffna in Srilanka, most people there are Hindus (Saivites), some Christians, a tiny minority of Muslims. You could find temples and churches next to each other in many areas. Many christians often attend hindu temples during festival days, hindus also go to churches. Many business men who sell toys, ice cream, etc during temple festival days are Muslims. There is a very famous hindu temple for Lord Skanda ( a son of Lord Siva) called Kataragama near the capital Colombo, this temple is run predominately by Sinhalese (Buddhist), near that temple, there is also a Lord Buddha temple. Even thousands of Buddhist monks visit Skanda’s temple. During a festival day, an elephant will carry a large box (known to have been give by Lord Skanda to his devotee many thousands of years ago and ordered by the lord to not to open it under any circumstances), on this day, you will see many thousands of Hindus, Buddhist, Christians and Muslims participate. Some people even claimed that they had a vision of the lord (in radiant form) and they attained spiritual enlightenment. Lots of Tamil Hindus from all over the world visit the temple every year. Web address for the temple is http://kataragama.org/. Also I would like to point out that there is a Skanda Vale Monastery in South Wales in the UK web page http://www.skandavale.org/, it was founded by a Sinhalese Buddhist from Srilanka. It is on a hill, you will find temples for Lord Skanda, Mother Kali, lord Vishnu, Lord Buddha and a church with marry and Jesus, more than 70000 people visit every year. This monastery promotes interfaith. There was an international conference held this year for Saivites, the chief guest was the president of Srilanka ( a Buddhist), a religious promoting organisation called Saiva Munnetta Sangam in the UK have a branch in Srilanka, they might know MPs for religions in Srilanka, they might be able to give more informations: SAIVA MUNNETTA SANGAM (U.K.) Community Service through Hindu Concern 2 Salisbury Road, Manor Park, London, E12 6AB Tel: 0181 924 8492 (01279) 757074 Fax: (01268) 561805 There are Ramakrishna missions in Colombo and Batticaloa. If you require more information, please e-mail me, I often go to temples and I can gather information from other Srilankans. --- Vivekananda Centre <vivekananda wrote: > Dear List members > > Two of our colleagues from the London Interfaith > Centre plan > to visit Sri Lanka and Bangalore at the end of > November > to explore ideas of Interfaith. > > Are there any list members in Sri Lanka or Bangalore > who > can help co-ordinate their work? > > regards > jay > Vivekananda Centre London > > > > >

Two other list members ( Chinmaya Nanda and Swamy) have already taken up the tasks of taking our visitors to meet the Senior Swamis of the RK mission and visit the Vivekananda Ashram in Ulsoor, so we are fine for the moment. This internet mailing list is beginning to show its real usefulness in the way it allows us to draw on the strength of its membership. Our thanks go out to all list members. jay We have already received two other offers from Chinmaya Nanda and Swamy
