How Do You Answer Questions About Caste?arKAUAI, HAWAII, November 21, 2003: Hinduism Today magazine is preparing an article with replies to common questions about Hinduism, such as why are there so many Gods, why the dot on the forehead, why do you worship cows, etc. One of the common questions is about caste: Isn't the caste system a kind of unfair discrimination? We're working to formulate a response to this kind of question and would appreciate input from readers addressing one or more of the following aspects of caste and the jati system:How do people in India (or the diaspora) regard caste and jati today?Does it remain a significant factor in their lives? Are there positive aspects of caste?Do Hindus really want to get "rid" of caste? How important is caste at the time of marriage?Do people really have a sense of "caste superiority," ie, that as a brahmin or kshatriya they should look down upon the sudras? What comparisons are there between the caste system of India and discriminatory systems in other countries, such as the British class system, or American racial segregation? What do you make of the harsh rules enforcing caste in the dharma shastras?Do converts to other religions in India escape caste, or does their caste follow them to the new faith?Kindly send your reply to "source" above.
