Title: Vivekananda: East Meets West

(A pictorial biography)

by : Swami Chetanananda

Published by: Vedanta Society of

St. Louis, Missouri (1995)

Hello All,

I wish to thank the Vedanta Society of St. Louis

and Swami Chetanananda for bringing out this exceptional

book.

The book is a veritable treasure chest

with 275 photographs

and most of them are rare ones.

The photos include that of

Bhuvaneswari Devi (Narendra's mother)

Western friends and devotees like

Katherine Abbot Sanborn,

Hale family, JJ Goodwin and many others.

When I got this book (from the local library),

I spent more than an hour only looking at

the photographs!

The book comes with appropriate excerpts from Swamiji's writings

and speeches appropriately and several interesting

incidents. I wish to post a few of these in this group

and here is one:

****************

At Belur Math one day,.....

Swamiji said to me

" I shall never see forty " .

I, knowing he was thirty nine, said to him,

" But Swami! Buddha did not do his great work until

between forty and eighty. "

But he said, " I delivered my message and I must go. "

I asked, " Why go? " and he said

" The shadow of a big tree will not let the smaller trees grow up.

I must go to make room. "

- Josephine Mc Leod

*************************

(Swami Vivekananda passed away on July 4th 1902 when he

was only 39 years old)

regards,

ramasamy
