Re :[sri Ramakrishna]Question on the Gita

Ramakrishna

Dear Friend,

The intentions of Arjuna and Bhisma Pitamaha were different in the battle.

Bhisma wanted liberation not gyana. He already knew that he would be killed in

the hands of Sri Krishna. In that sense he was not a seeker of knowledge. He

knew the outcome of the battle and was ready for it. He was a man who was

perfectly poised and needed no advice.

Arjuna, on the other hand, was not so sure. He did not know how he would fare.

He was very confident of winning but when he saw his own dear relatives against

whom he had to fight, and most probably kill, he was utterly deluded. He was

overcome by emotions. He even contemplated leaving the battlefield not knowing

that the battle was already decided in his favour. In a sense he is like us who

do not realise the divine will behind all actions. We identify ourselves as

doers and not instruments in the hands of God. Therefore it was Arjuna who

needed advice and not Bhisma.

Arjuna had a long life ahead of him but Bhisma was weary of life and was seeking

a way out of it. It is a man who is in the prime of youth who profits from

advice and not a person who is nearing death.

Regards,

Jagannath.

Just wanted to thank Jagannath Chatterhee you for a very clear explanation of

the fact as to why Arjuna was chosen over Pitamaha Bhisma in Gita upodesh.

God bless the universe.
