Guest guest
Dear Ramanujam: It is in deed challenge to everyone to control his/her mind. If any one says otherwise, he/she would be lying. As Krishna says in Bhagvadgeetha, we need to practice stabilizing our mind. Further, Krishna says to everyone through Arjuna: Offer everything to me. Then you are responsible for nothing. This is true Karma Yoga. We need to study scriptures, pray, meditate and perform community service- all these will help our mind to focus on God and take us towards self-realization. Guest guest
Ramanujam, Patanjali recommends practice and nonattachment, the two wings of the bird that take you to freedom from the mind's disturbance. Certainly repeating God's name is a great practice. You could also do a little analysis to see what is the root cause of the disturbance. You might discover that the root cause is related to attraction or aversion; either you didn't get what you wanted or got something you didn't want. A good practice is to just watch the disturbance and try to cultivate objectivity; the witness attitude. Like " Oh here comes frustration! " " Here comes anger! " Big surprise! THE mind is disturbed. It's not YOU. You are the Witness of the mind. This gives you space so that the emotion doesn't overwhelm you. These emotions are just passing clouds, and they will pass if you don't resist them or try to change them. The sun is always shining although it is sometimes obstructed. Don't judge yourself- that's an easy trap to fall into also. Don't think " I shouldn't be thinking these thoughts! " By observing and cultivating the witness attitude, these negative thoughts will lose their momentum and leave you when you stop resisting, judging, or worrying about them. Milarepa, the great Tibetan Yogi said: " Take tea with your demons! " You can say " Hello fear, how are you today? " Although they are uninvited guests, welcome them and see what they have to teach you. One of my teachers said that he learned how to be loving by observing how unloving his mind was. Observation is key. Another technique, by the great Patanjali, is to cultivate the opposite thought. If you have thoughts of hatred or aversion, cultivate love and compassion. If you feel desire and restlessness, cultivate contentment. Pray to God to remove these obstacles. Take refuge in your mantra... Guest guest
Hello All I just wanted to add something to this discussion: I read some where that one should be very careful while chanting gods name or a mantra as a mantra replicates the feeling which are in your mind at the time of recital. So if you have negative feeling in your mind when you are chanting gods name or a mantra they will get further replicated at the time of recital. This thing confused me 'coz when ever i get negative feeling in my mind just to avoid them i try to speak Gayatri mantra again and again. I feel that helps me in getting rid of negative feeling at least at that moment. Thanks Amita umeshgulati wrote: Take the name of God continuously will calm your mind. Guest guest
Dear Amita, I am not an authority on Hinduism. BUt I do know certain basic principles and practices. You can counter the negative thoughts only with positive thoughts just as water extinguishes fire. So whenever we have any type of negative thoughts such as related to fear, anguish, anxiety, lust, greed, etc. if we truly repaet Gayathri mantra, with full feeling, it will definitely help. For those who dont know the full meaning of Gayathri mantra, I will be pleased to send it. Just let me know. We are using Gayathri mantra in our weekly religious services to college students in various universities in the USA. Good day. --- Amita Shukla <shuklaamita wrote: > Hello All > > I just wanted to add something to this discussion: > I read some where that one should be very careful > while chanting gods name or a mantra > as a mantra replicates the feeling which are in your > mind at the time of recital. > So if you have negative feeling in your mind when > you are chanting gods name or a mantra they will get > further replicated at the time of recital. > This thing confused me 'coz when ever i get negative > feeling in my mind just to avoid them i try to speak > Gayatri mantra again and again. > I feel that helps me in getting rid of negative > feeling at least at that moment. > > Thanks > Amita > > umeshgulati wrote: > Take the name of God continuously will calm your > mind. > Umesh > > > [Non-text portions of this message have been > removed] > > > > > Sri Ramakrishnaya Namah > Vivekananda Centre London > http://www.vivekananda.co.uk > > >
