Dear Friends,

Many argue that if one has not been able to join a Math then why not enter the

samsara? Why dangle as a bachelor which, for them, is a neither here nor there

state.

I would like to remind them about Sri Ramakrishna's words, " If I could not marry

Rama, then should I marry Shyama? " . What he meant was we should be as sincere to

our ideal as possible.

The bachelors life, despite its difficulties, gives one a lot of time for both

seva and spiritual practices. When lived properly it is akin to living in a Math

as a sannyasin. The bachelor is a real hero as he fights without the aid of a

sannyasis ochre robe and without the protection of the four walls of the Math.

He mixes with the common people, comes in contact with the opposite sex and yet

remains calm and confident. People may criticise him but the same people look to

him for guidance when they fall into trouble. This is because of the strength of

brahmacharya of the devoted bachelor.

One can see such souls in many organisations in India leading selfless lives and

progressing positively towards their goal. Not only men but there are many women

devotees also who lead such lives. My head bows down before them in reverence.

Their heroism is much more compared to the men. Their sincerity deserves

appreciation. I am reminded of Swami Shankaranada's words while he inaugurated

the Sarada Math, " You girls will far exceed us in your devotion " . When I go to

the Belur Math I see many such sisters sitting in different corners of the

various temples silently meditating or telling their beads. Their faces reflect

joy, not pain or suffering. They are the darlings of Thakur, Ma and Swamiji. If

our sisters can remain spinsters can we men not remain bachelors to serve the

Lord?

To be continued.

Love & Regards,

Jagannath.
