Dear List

Promoting celibacy is considered old-fashioned and out of place in

modern society. There are many aspects to this issue that we can examine:

(a) Many of the modern proponents of spirituality have suggested that

sex in a loving relationship with one partner is fine. It is only the

promiscuous

aspect that need to be controlled. They would even suggest as expressed in

the Sikh and Jewish faiths that such loving relationship is religious

living.

Their prophets discouraged celibate life-styles. Then we have the

uncompromising teachings of Sri Ramakrishna promoting celibacy:-

'Marriage should not be used as a licence for lust - after the birth of one

or two children the couple should revert to a celibate life-style.'

(b) Then there are the physical aspects. The idea of preserving the 'semen'

is

given great importance in many scriptures. Women do not produce semen

so are they biologically incapable of spiritual progress?

© Unbridled sex in the West (and of course emulated in the East) has

reached epidemic proportions. The secular forces in society for their own

reasons are trying to address the issue. Can we offer ideas on how to

combat this phenomenon?

The topic is emotive and will generate a lot of mail. Please keep the

emails short and focused else we will not post them.
