I am very fond of Hindu philosophy, though I come from Shia Muslim family. I mostly enjoy reading mails and up till now I have been quietly reading interesting mail from others. In The Quran, there are verses which using the word yatafakroon and yatbaroon emphaise the process of contemplation as an essential duty of Muslims. Quran mentions the necessity of contemaplation and meditation in good many places. If you give deep thought to Quran, you will know it. Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upn him) used to go the Cave Hira for meditation and contemplation before Quran was revealed to him by Arch Angel Gibrail. In fact, it was during his deep process of supreme enlightening kind of meditation and contemplation in cave Hira near Mecca when the first verses of Quran were revealed. It is in History books of Islam, the first expereince of receiving divine revealtion was so suddenly enlgihtening, that it scared even the Seal of Prophets. As for the ways of realization, yes there are are paths or ways in Islamic sufism to attain God. Ibn Arbi and Mansure al Haj were the sufis who advocated esorteric ways to attain God who, they quoted from Holy Quran " is nearer to you than jugular vein. I hope that it will be sufficeint for some of my freinds who mistakenly think that Islam has no concept of meditation or contemplation. There is an organized system of philosophy in Muslim philosophy which is called Wahadat ul Wajud which says the etire existence including God is One, the nature is manifestation of One Reality. You may read Gahlib as fine example of sufi philosphy. There are Punjabi sufi poets like Shah Husssain, Bulleh Shah, Waris Shah, and Sufi saints like Lal Shahbaz Qalandar who adovocated wahadutal wajud or what you can all a sort of Islmaic pantheism. For my part i am very fond of Vivekananda and Sri Ramakrishana. Would you please tell me links from where i can downaload e-book entitled ' gospel of Sri Ramakrishna'. For my part, I believe in many doctrines of Hindu philosphy. Yes I agree with you when you say Islam was spread using sword. after death of Prophet, some personalities employed coerecive measures like sword to spread Islam and according to Shi,ites school of thought, to which I come from, these presons usurped the rights of Prophet ahulbait, or Prophet Muhammad's family, such as Ali , Hussain who were paragaons of virtues, simplicity, courage, bravery , generosity and all ideal human virtues. Many Hindus regard them as avtars of Hindu deity, Vishnu. It will be interesting to note that in Lucknow Hindu Holy men or sadhus and priests also participated in protest against the sacrilege of Holy places like Karbala or Najaf by US led coaltion forces. All sufis and great Muslim saints derive inspiration from supreme acts of courage, bravery and sacrfice in both mundane and spiritual spheres and regard Ali, and Hussain as the spiritual and moral ideas for all human beings Let me tell you one more thing, when Islam entered Indian subcontinent, some Hindu instead of converting to version of Islam brought by the conquerers synthsied Hinduism with Shia Islam. This sect was called Karamti which orehodox sunnis abhored as heretics. These karmatis sysnthesized HIndu epic with Shia doctine of Imamate. They beleieved that Ali, the cousin of Prophet of Muhmmad, was incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Kamatis were peresecuted by Mahmood of Ghanza the so-called conquererof Somnath, and now no karamatis exist, thanks to the persecution and execution of Karamtis at the hands of fanatic and extremists sunnis like the same Mahmood of Ghazna who served Islam by putting them to his sword. I have expressed my views which i tried long not express here, as I mysels enjoy reading thought provoking mails and consider myself humble compared with other learned membere of this group. God bless you all with best wishes and high regards H. Ali Syed

Guest guest
I thank you for that lovely message. I think it's important not to codemn other religions without intensely and earnestly studying the tenets, philosophy and scriptures of that religion. To merely condemn Islam, would be as riduculous as charging Hinduism as mere idolatory, ignoring the lofty heights of the contemplative and experiential philosophy of the Upanishads and the vedanata commentaries etc. Indeed, we need more people to do this; not to be afraid of admitting the weaknesses of one's religion n accept the goodpoints of others...that's when dialogue begins and when we can begin to see the good aspects within other traditions. If Mr Haider was not in this group, we would have gone off at a tangent of Islam bashing and condemning it as a simplistic religion of the sword, where as in truth much of as have not even made a sincere attempt to deeply understand the serious depths of its philosophy. My view is that we must seek out the similarities and points of contact and agreement between the various world religions if we are to find a harmonious way forward for all mankind( an approach I feel was exemplified by Sri Ramakrishna and Swamiji). I would also like to add that Islamic fundamentalism is hardly really any worse than Christian or Hindu fundamentalism. It is 'fundamentalism ' itself which is a problem. Shanti, Kalidas. Guest guest
Dear H Ali Syed, Here is a link to a page by which you should be able to download the Kathamrita (Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna): http://www.kathamrita.org/links.htm By the way, thank you for your very interesting and enlightening information in regard to Islam. I live in the U.S. and I have great respect for Islam. When I was younger I participated in a Sufi group in the city where I was born and raised. Having moved from there I have never been able to find such a group again; but nowadays it isn't necessary anyway. But in general I believe that it is good to for all persons to develop a factual understanding of others' religions. Thank you for helping in that way. Warmest regards and best wishes, michael --- Haider Ali Agha <haider37 wrote: > > Dear Partha > I have already downloaded Sri Vivekananda's works > and > studying them with profound interest.
