Swamiji's doubts.

Dear Friends,

One does not know who was greater, Sri Ramakrishna or Swamiji. Sri Ramakrishna

himself put this doubts into our heads when he almost fell on the feet of

Swamiji calling him Nara Narayana - one who had come to deliver the world,

during their second meeting at Dakshineswar. Again it was Sri Ramakrishna who

revealed that it was at his behest that Swamiji, one of the Sapta Rishis, agreed

to descend to earth.

While Sri Ramakrishna knew all the while about his divinity, for some reason

Swamiji was denied the knowledge of his divinity and origin which was revealed

to him only a few days prior to his samadhi. The same was the case with Raja

Maharaj. Sri Ramakrishna was always apprehensive lest these two realise their

divine nature and leave the world without completing the task at hand.

Now let us consider their play on earth. While Sri Ramakrishna represented the

condensed spirituality of India that has evolved over 5000 years of intense

search for the truth, Swamiji represented the modern, educated cynical mind. It

was as if Sri Ramakrishna wanted Swamiji to oppose his own teachings tooth and

nail so that the coming generations of similiar cynics would find it easier to

accept him. Without Swamiji and his doubts Sri Ramakrishna would have been

incomplete. I remember with reverence the following conversation between Thakur

and Swamiji,

Swamiji : I don't believe in blind faith!

Thakur : But my dear boy faith itself is blind!

It was as if Sri Ramakrishna wanted the rationilistic and proof driven society

of today to realise that the truth lay beyond the scope of the senses. The pain

that Sri Ramakrishna felt at the disbelief and ignorance of the modern man to

his (man's) divine origin came out clearly whenever he argued with Swamiji and

cleared his doubts. The doubts of Swamiji should be seen in the above

perspective.

Towards the end of the life when a brother disciple asked him whether he had

realised who he really was, Swamiji replied in the affirmative. As it was Sri

Ramakrishna who had kept the secret from him, it becomes clear that by realising

his own identity Swamiji also fully realised who Sri Ramakrishna really was. All

his doubts, and also ours, was thus laid to rest on that day.

Regards,

Jagannath.
