What could he > have meant when he said that good works do not help others? > =================response==================== What a wonderful paradox to unravel. This saying of Swami Vivekananda must be seen in context of the central teaching of the Gita: 'Action is better than inaction' ..... but action that is 'self-centred' causes bondage while the action that is 'self-less' brings freedom. The same question we ask about the 'action of Vivekananda' doing good to others can also be asked of 'action of Krishna' ....when Krishna also says in the Gita: " I am born again and again for the good of mankind ....was he contradicting himself? " : ) When God is being 'self-centred' in trying to do good to the world would you call this activity ego-centred or God-centred : ) regards jay

From bondage. > >> > Tell me... where is there, even " bondage, " that is separate from God? > > > Hafizullah > Response-- --- Is there a bondage that is 'Separate from God'? Thank you for asking.....reply..... If 'Bondage is seen no longer as separate from God then it is no longer a bondage' This is a variation of the old question in Hinduism:- If Maya is also God's creation why try and overcome it? The reply was given: " If it is experienced (not just accepted intellectually but actually experienced) as the 'manifesting power of God' it no longer binds. It is embraced as Kali. So we come back to Vivekanada's quote. When he made this statement he was not addressing a God realised person but the rest of mankind. It is very important to view each statement of a God-man in context. jay
Guest guest
Namaste The effect of action only comes back to the one who acts. You think " Oh, I am helping this person, this cause, etc. " , but how the effect plays out in the lives of others is according to their own karma and the grace in their own lives. To think you will get something from them is illusion, escape from reality, and by limiting the effect by limiting the cause of your own expectation you hurt yourself. But this is not the real question. If you want to be perceived as a good person, and get credit then you must seek to serve with no thought of reward, like Christ, or Sri Ramakrishna. Wanting recognition, valuing pride, is not love, and love will not be the effect. Guest guest
Karma Yoga is for the purification of the mind. Mind gets purified when we serve the society withou t any expectation of reward in terms of name, fame or power. If we think that we are elevating the world by our good deeds, we will foster our ego and not purify our mind. As Swami Vivekananda said, we should feel privileged to serve the less proivileged than ourselves and feel that GOd has given us an opportunity to serve His cause. If we serve the society with this attitude, our mind gets purified and God-realization becomes easier than before. The same idea is also expressed in BHagvadgeeta, in the chapter on Karma Yoga. --- Bob Rose <bobrose108 wrote: > Namaste > > The effect of action only comes back to the one who > acts. . > > > > > ===== Incredibly low long distance phone rate: 4.5 cents pm! go to:http://www.ldpcphonemodem.cjb.net Need extra cash? Guest guest
I can see how good works effects each individuals karma. The recipient of the good works now has a " karmic " debt to pay off. When helping anyone, I am ofter offered a monatary reinbursement. I simply asked the individual to help 10 others. Letting the good will spread. Commit random acts of kindness. Guest guest
No doubt true from one perspective. The Sufis would say that God gives unreservedly to His creatures --- and also, that since all is of God anyway, God is only giving to GodSelf, one hand to the other, so there is no debt, only a fair exchange in the balance of the Universe.
