Guest guest
Sri Ramakrishna Charanam Saranam; Sri Sri Ma Udayshankar's posting (Digest 1899) on the unique way of dispensing medicines by Vijnan Maharaj is interesting to read. Here is another example, happened much later in our Ramakrishna Order. It was during 1939 to 1942, when the present huge Ramakrishna Mission Hospital complex in Trivandrum (Thiruv-anantha-puram)was in its infant stage. One of the founding monks of that hospital, Swami Vishadanandaji (1905-'85) was in charge of that hospital in those days. Swami Tapasyanandaji was the President of the Centre then. No doctors were employed with salary to attend on the patients. Devotee-doctors like Dr Raman Tampi (then DMO, Trivandrum)and others were attending the hospital on voluntary basis without accepting a single cent from the Mission as payments for their services. There were days, when these doctors could not come to the hospital due to their commitments in Government hospitals. Patients, mostly from villagers would come in large numbers even when doctors were absent. Vishadanandaji would sit in the doctor's chambers with Thakur's name in his lips and would examine the patients and prescribe the medicines. When all the patients finished seeing the " doctor " , the Swami would take up the role of the pharmacist and dispense the medicines in the same way. Once the dispensing of the medicines was over, the Swami would attend on to the other patients, who need bandages or even minor surgery!!! The Swami did all these various duties single handedly and not even a single case went astray. In fact, the villagers felt that when the Swami gave medicines, they would be cured quickly!!! Vishadanandaji too was an Engineer by profession in his pre-monastic days. Later, he took active participation in the Mission's cholera relief works in the high ranges of the Travancore state as the team leader of the Narendra Mission Medical works under the Ramakrishna Mission, Trivandrum. Much later, in 1970s or 80s, the Swami used to narrate those incidents impressing upon us about the wonderful results of firmly holding on to the Lotus Feet of Bhagavan Sri Ramakrishna and doing His duties, whatever assignments they may be, as various forms of worships offered to Him. He used to advise us to chant the Ramakrishna mantram incessantly like the way we breathe continuously without cessation.

Real life incidents like this go a long way to anchor the fact in our mind the power of the Ramakrishna manthram. Members who are in close association with the Math & Mission may be able to share a lot more details like this which largely remain unpublished.
