The new complex will house a library, a research centre and a centre for the development of slums and rural areas. KOLKATA, Sept. 26. — There is too much violence and corruption in the society and the youths should follow Swami Vivekananda’s teachings of fearlessness, and self-reliance in order to check these social vices, Swami Ranganathanandaji Maharaj, president of Ramakrishna Mission, said today. He inaugurated the refurbished ancestral home of Swami Vivekananda on Gour Mohun Mukherjee Street in north Kolkata. “I recommend two books for the youths — Swamiji’s speeches from Colombo to Almora in English and Bharate Vivekananda in Bengali,” he said. He said that he had first visited this house in 1929 to meet Swamiji’s brothers Mahendranath Dutta and Bhupendranath Dutta. Ranganathanandaji said that he met Pandit Nehru in Kashmir in 1946 and had discussed Swamiji with him. Nehru had profound respect for Swamiji. In Discovery of India, Nehru had written: “Rooted in the past, full of pride in India’s prestige Vivekananda was yet modern in his approach to life’s problems, and was a bridge between the past of India and the present,” president Maharaj quoted. He said that the youths must develop self-reliance and serve the society for the welfare of the country. He said that every one should follow Vivekananda’s messages about developing characters, spreading education and serving the poor and backward communities for the betterment of the country. The secretary of Ramakrishna Mission Golpark, said that the building had been a witness to several important incidents in Swamiji’s life. Swami Bisokananda said that the estimated cost of the restoration work is Rs 14 crore. Another Rs 6 crore was spent for the rehabilitation of those families, which used to stay in the house. It took five years to complete the renovation.
