Guest guest
Dear List We have been trying to find out 'roughly' what percentage of funding is used for 'Advertisement and Administration' by major world charities like Red Cross, Oxfam and Christian Aid Surprisingly these figures are not easy to find even though the work of these charities should be transparent. Can any member give us 'rough' ideas of figures involved? regards Vivekananda Centre London

Guest guest
Om Namah Sivaya I pay subscription to Oxfam, they claimed over 78p in every £1 goes to fight poverty in the letter that they sent me. Probably 22% of funding is used for 'Advertisement and Administration'. Guest guest
Dear Centre Manager, The best run charity in the UK is Barnerdo's. This is run as a very efficient business. They roughly allocate 8pence to a pound sterling for Administration, many sophisticated commercial enterprises would struggle hard to match this efficiency ratio. All depends upon your turnover when you are talking about percentage spend. You may ask Barnardo's UK Director of Marketing and communications, Mr Andrew Nebel. You may find their website easily. On the whole nicely managed professional charities engaged in fundraising allow anything between 12% to 32% on Administration. The charities that are run by well intentioned volunteers tend to spend more due to unprofessional approach to begin with. Initially you need a good set up then a planned programme with set objectives, then you must carry on with fundraising. Charities and businesses should work together for their mutual benefits. Admin costs must be kept to a minimum because donors want to know that most of their money is used for the intended purpose. There are an estimated 186,000 charities in the UK and their collective income is a staggering £26 billion yearly and this sector employs some 563,000 people nationwide. The top 500 charities tend to account for 80% of voluntary activity in this country. The average household donation in terms of charity giving is an estimated £2 per week in the UK. Ramkrishna mission must avoid the risks of poor cash flow management. A charity must maintain its deserving status as providers of "SERVICE TO MANKIND" and yet they must improve businesslike approach with a professional touch and strive for more creative forms of fundraising. This is in order to improve "SERVICE TO MANKIND". I hope this will help the person who raised the question! Om tat sat. Asis Bagchi
