Holy Mothers Attitude to Devotees.

Dear Friends,

In a previous mail, while replying to Gayatri's query, I had dwelt on the subject of Thakurs attitude towards his devotees.

The Holy Mother's attitude towards her children was vastly different from Thakur. She rarely refused anyone. We have instances of Raja Maharaj and Mahapurush Maharaj shooing off incompetent or potentially dangerous spiritual seekers and asking them instead to report to The Holy Mother. They probably thought that this would dissuade the persons from asking for initiation. But wonder of wonders, these devotees found their way to Mother and were accepted. When such news reached Belur Math, the spiritual giants shuddered, "Mother has accepted the poison we were so afraid of taking on ourselves!!!. Glory be to God!!".

Mother often vented her anger on Thakur, "He chose the best of the best and left the rest to me." I really wonder where we all would have been if Holy Mother had not accompanied Thakur during his sojourn on earth.

We have very rare instances where even Mother was hesitant. "Stay here at Joyrambati for three nights, " we find her saying on one occasion, "then I will think of initiating you." These are the words which have prompted sinners like me to travel to Joyrambati in the hope of redeeming our sins. Once the deed is done we find that we are freed of all fears. Joy Ma!!!

The people of her times who were castigated by society for their transgressions were the favourites of Mother. "I am from a very low caste Mother!!", we hear one devotee pleading. "So what? You are my child, go take a dip and come. I will initiate you.", was Mothers reply.

"Whatever she has done, she has done, " was mothers comments on the immoral act of a young lady devotee, "now she will not repeat it. Should we drive away someone if she has slipped a little?" She was not insincere when she asked us not to see the faults of others. She had practised this awesome task all her life. Forgiveness came naturally to her. She could not see any impurity in anyone simply because she had none within her.

Whoever had the good fortune of being initiated by Mother was indeed blessed. I know of a family from Bankura who are devotees of the Holy Mother. Their ancestor was a CID inspector , under the British Raj, who was posted at Joyrambati to keep an eye on the "terrorists" who visited her. Mother was aware of this and, to protect her children, used to take special care of this official. The official, feared by even his own colleagues, ultimately became a sincere devotee of hers and till today his lineage worships the feet of the Holy Mother. Of what nature was this intense love she could project that could make even the devils fall at her feet? I, for one, would die to find out.

While Thakurs disciples were famous, Mothers children were mostly anonymous. They were doubly blessed because they found a Mother and not just a distant God.

Regards,

Jagannath.
