Guest guest
Respected Sir, Can anyone tell me why do we light a lamp? In Indian home we lit a lamp daily before the altar of the Lord. sometimes at dawn or at dusk also and sometime it is maintained continously (akhanda deepa). When lamp is buring, oxygen is burnt and if we are in a worship room, we get less oxygen for our respiration. Anxiously waiting to know. Guest guest
Hello, In those days, lamps were the source of light, as there were no electric bulbs, etc. The prayer room was mostly the center room in the house and keeping a lighted lamp there would light up most of the house. Besides, houses were built with plenty of ventilation, and there was no fear of oxygen depravation. The light and heat from them (and perhaps the smell of the oil) kept away insects. From the significance point of view, the light signified knowledge, removing the darkness of ignorance. My views spring from my observations at our ancestral home in South India. Even today, the beauty of lamp light is incomparable to the bright flashy lights.... Thanks, Hari > Respected Sir, > > Can anyone tell me why do we light a lamp?
