There is no peace without the grace of God, and there is no grace of God without prayer. Prayer is not an old woman’s idle amusement. Properly understood and applied, it is the most potent instrument of action. Undoubtedly, prayer requires a living faith in God. Heartfelt prayer steadies one’s nerves, humbles one and clearly shows one the next step. " - Mahatma Gandhi Deepam is the light in us, the very soul that exists in us which we offer to the deity as acknowledgement of our surrender and devotion. On the elemental side it stands for the element of ether that exists in us as Atman. But don't lit lamp blindly, just telling it is custom nor give it up just becuase it is a physical activity, but try to making sense out of our popular practices and cultivate faith in god. But don't worry about polution or fire accidents, oxygen or carbondioxide. You are not living in a space shuttle or on Everest, where oxygen is very precious. If you worried more about polution done by practicing religous rituals compensate that by planting more trees. The Deepam points to another significant fact. Wherever it may be placed, the flame goes upwards only and never moves down. Likewise, the flame of Gnanam (Spiritual Wisdom) leads one to a sublime level through the path of Righteousness OM Asatoma Sadgamaya Tamasoma Jyothirgamaya Mrityorma Amrutamgamaya OM Shanti Om Shanti, Shanthi! Meaning: From illusion, Lead me to reality. From darkness, Lead me to light. From death, Lead me to immortality Peace! Peace! Peace! na tatra suryo bhati na chandra tarakam nema vidhyuto bhanti kutoyam agnihi tameva bhantam anubhati sarvam tasya bhasa sarvam idam vibhati Meening: The sun does not cast light there, nor does the moon nor the stars, nor even electricity (lightning) illumines it, so what can this small flame do! That alone shines and brightens everything and by its light alone all this is illumined. !!!!!!!!! somasekhar
