Education

The work we do in the field of religious education continues to expand. This year we fielded 300 candidates to sit for GCSE and Advanced level examinations in Hinduism. We continue to take Hindu teachings to mainstream schools through assemblies and seminars. We just did a session at Norwich School which is situated within the compound of Norwich Cathedral. The session on Hinduism was for 85 candidates from all over the Norfolk region who will be joining Oxford or Cambridge Universities. The radical ideas of Hinduism that bridge the gap between Science and Religion was one of the themes that we developed. The session was received with a great deal of enthusiasm. Earlier on Thursday we did a one day session for the Teachers in training at the University of East Anglia. The theme we emphasised was Religious Pluralism. Ironically in the middle of the morning session we got the news of the London bombings. We continue to interact strongly with the academic bodies in this country. We robustly dispel serious misconceptions that have been allowed to parade as Hinduism in the academic field. We continue to meet resistance from some of the biased elements within the system but overall we are gaining acceptance.

Publication

The book: Hinduism for Schools that we published earlier on this year is selling well and making its entry into the school system. This summer we hope to publish two more books: Primary Hinduism for school children between the ages of 6 and 12 & Advanced Hinduism that examines the findings at the cutting edge of science and their conceptual significance in linking science with spirituality.

Media

From time to time we get a chance make contributions on BBC Radio 2 programmes but Radio 4 (the mainstream) continues to prefer the more Abrahamic version of Hinduism. Commercial media both Western and Indian has never shown any real enthusiasm for religions, let alone Hinduism. It is a matter of time before we gain a better foot hold in the media. The exposure that Hinduism has had in the Western media so far has been mostly derogatory. We are beginning to detect a slight shift in the attitude of the media, like the BBC, towards Hinduism. We will keep you posted on the developments.

Dear Jay,

You are doing a wonderful job. God Bless you.

Will it be possible for you to please give us the table of contents of

the book, " Advanced Hinduism " ? I am interested to know what areas are

covered. On the subject of Science and Spirituality, a seminar on this

subject was held at the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture.

Here is an interesting Jewish article on the subject;

Maybe you can tie up with Belur Math for the distribution of your books

in India through its book stalls?

Regards,

Jagannath.

Hello to all,

I would like to say that thanks to the website of Vivekananda Centre London many people like me, living in small countries where teachengs of Swami Vivekananda and Sri Ramakrishna are not translated and issued, could have "The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda" available. It was through your website that I have known about Sri Ramakrishna in "Sri Sri Ramakrishna Kathamrita" and through it also I had the ability to read Swami Vivekananda's biography.

Thanks and regards,

Milena

Dear Jay

Accept my hearty congratulations for doing a good work in

UK.

Can we have an outline of the Hinduism course you are

working on. Also is it available on-line?

Some pointers would help.

Ajit,

The best answer for this is to read Swamiji's

Paper on Hinduism

Read at the World's Parliament of Religions, Chicago

19th September 1893
