Guest guest
> Dear Debajit Das and Vikas, This is most unfortunate -- that Romain Rolland has been taken out of context for a negative purpose. Rolland had the very greatest admiration and love for Sri Ramakrishna. The passage you refer to is in Rolland's " The Life of Ramakrishna " first chapter titled, " The Gospel of Childhood. " He has just described and discussed Gadadhar's first losing consciousness in the field, watching the dark cloud above, and then tells of his taking the part of Shiva: " ... suddenly his being was possessed by his hero; tears of joy coursed down his little cheeks; he lost himself in the glory of God; he was transported... From that time the ecstasies became more frequent. In Europe the case would have been foredoomed, and the child would have been placed in a lunatic asylum under ... psycho-therapy... the flame would have been quenched. The magic lantern would have been no more!.. " Please understand that Rolland was a sincere devotee of both Ramakrishna and Vivekananda. Guest guest
No one can doubt the faith of Romain Rolland and the exquisite biography he has written about Ramakrishna, esp. the Swan Song. Edith is correct that he has been quoted out of context, by a historian who may not have that level of understanding or may not have cared to go into detail. And the media just jumps on to make it a flashy news. No one cared to go deep in this context. If you can do, you may present the facts to NCERT and request them to revise it. I do not think they would ignore it. Vinay <snip> ... earlier message from Edith Tipple.
