Guest guest
Dear Sunil, Namaste. Whether to be vegetarian or non vegeatarian depends on a number of factors. Many spiritual aspirants prefer to be vegetarian, especially those who do not have much of physical activities. Non vegetarian food is rajasic and/or tamasic in nature and may agitate the mind. However the monks of the Ramakrishna Order do take non vegetarian food because they have to participate in various social and relief work. Being finicky about food would be a hindrance to them. But this does not mean that all monks of the Order are non vegetarian. Many are vegetarian. Many Mission centres in the south are strictly vegetarian. The Eastern zone have fish occasionally and the Northern centres may serve mutton also. But even in these centres the personal preference of the Monks are respected. In the Math, eating for the sake of gorging ones stomache is not encouraged but the nutrition requirements of the Monks are taken care of. Both Thakur and Holy Mother advocated the eating of fish. Today the medical community also advocates the same as certain fatty acids found in fish have therapeutic properties. Thakurs view was that the main concern should be to concentrate upon God and not upon food. Swamiji too had the same opinion. Moreover the Holy Trio had rightly prophecied that in this era of food shortages restrictions on food may prove to be counterproductive. In today's polluted atmosphere the medical community has advocated a fish based diet alone and advised against various forms of meat. This is because of the current tendency to feed and inject steroids and other harmful chemicals into poultry and cattle for increase in meat and milk production. This use of steroids/banned substances and the effects on humans who are consuming the adultrated meat and milk is a cause for concern worldwide. Take the food that suits you is the advice I give to all who ask. But we should also be aware of the nature of the food we are taking. Regards, Jagannath.
