Guest guest
Last Thursday we had a lengthy meeting with the Head of Religion & Ethics at the BBC, together with a string of executives in charge of religious programming. Our concerns and ideas were received warmly. How quickly some of these ideas become integrated in present programming or in future programmes is something we cannot guarantee but we have set the ball rolling. The head of BBC Religion/Ethics was well impressed with some of the ideas we advocated, but we also became very aware of serious resistance from one or two executives who were not so 'keen' on such dynamic ideas of Hinduism getting on air. They exhibited serious resistance and outlined a list of 'difficulties' they faced, like fighting for finance within the BBC, or how difficult it is to turn subtle ideas into an acceptable programme format. One thing that made us smile is that the 'Conference pack' the BBC had produced and distributed to all the participants had a copy of the Hinduism for Today article about the work of the Vivekananda Centre London in using the teachings of Vivekananda to revive the message of spirituality in UK. We live in interesting times! It seems that our mentors who are sometimes referred to as messengers of spirituality to the West are now keen to enter the Western media and may be doing so in the most unusual manner : ) jay Vivekananda Centre London
